It’s the annual ALDI wooden toy sale one

Lighthearted! Not seen a thread on this yet this year so thought I’d start one during bedtime..

What are people’s thoughts about buying up loads and loads of these cheap “tiny town” wooden toys Aldi sell periodically in their middle aisle, to then yank the price up to re-sell on Vinted?

i was at my local Aldi at about 9am this morning (so already pretty early - it only opens at 8am!) and some of the big ticket items were already gone. The cashier said people had been queueing before they were even open.

I saw people walking out with big shopping carts full to the brim, and others walking around the merch on video calls, trying to decide what to buy. Lo and behold this evening Vinted is flooded with the stuff. Some of the mark up is crazy - £50 for a £19.99 toy!

So a part of me instinctively feels this is wrong - buying up (hoarding) to then re-sell for profit, preventing other parents from stocking up on cheap presents etc. Another part of me thinks, do you know what, they went through the effort to be there at the right time and get the stuff, and we’ve all got to make a living - fair dos!

So AIBU?
YABU - the above behaviour is just plain wrong
YANBU - let people be!

It's disgusting and selfish.

bobandbrenda · 09/10/2025 20:20

The people who buy for those prices on Vinted have only got themselves to blame

slightlyoverbaked · 09/10/2025 20:22

Of course it’s morally wrong. But there’s no way to stop it…apart from people refusing to pay inflated prices on Vinted etc

MidnightPatrol · 09/10/2025 20:22

I’d recommend buying quality wooden toys from Jaques.

A big variety, robust, well-priced (and often discounts offered), family business.

I think they actually have 25% off at the moment.

Available from the shop all year round with no panic buying needed…

So I sort of agree with your point!

But on the other hand Vinted is flooded with items that have been bought for literal pennies on Temu, and again being re-sold with a massive mark up - and it seems people get caught out by this a lot. So if you’re blissfully unaware/you don’t reverse search your items on vinted - I think you can get quite easily caught out!

Completely agree !! It’s so unbelievably selfish & greedy. I really hope no one buys any of the things on Vinted so they are just stuck with all the stuff they bought.

I wanted the learning tower which was selling for £35, didn’t manage to get it and I can see it for £75 on Vinted.

Busted2006 · 09/10/2025 20:36

Lidl have a similar event, got some great stuff today.

back to your question, it’s selfish and I would refuse to buy it off vinted out of principle

mumofoneAloneandwell · 09/10/2025 20:36

Really nasty and selfish

The same people who were buying up LOADS of toilet roll during the pandemic and probably vote Reform because Farage is alright really

Okay ive taken this thread a little personally 😅

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/10/2025 20:37

You can say they’re entrepreneurs or you can say they’re greedy so and so’s.

Ah so frustrating for you! I didn’t see that one today at my local store..I wonder if it was already gone, one hour in! Imagine if you bought it for that much on Vinted, and that’s before postage - it’s crazy!

Well this is just it! They would probably argue (this is purely hypothetical!) that it’s really hard to get a job around school hours, childcare fees are astronomical, etc etc, and this is a way they can make ends meet!

I popped in this morning to buy a few things and there were people loading up trolleys. I think there should be a limit on what you’re allowed to buy. It’s selfish. Let families buy some affordable toys for their kids for Christmas!

I’m tempted to troll the resellers on Vinted by offering them the original price. The cake I bought for £4.99 today is going for £15-20. Are people really buying it for that price?

Haha I honestly thought about doing the same! You can actually report those accounts as well, but to what purpose? I’m pretty sure Vinted won’t care!

Its morally wrong whether its a £5 toy from aldi, or a £200 concert ticket.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 10/10/2025 08:29

More fool Aldi for not limiting the number of items one person can buy.

Bagsintheboot · 10/10/2025 08:49

It's all pretty distasteful to my mind. Both the baffling scramble of desperation by so many people to get their hands on them, and the ones who exploit that desperation.

At the end of the day, it's just a cheap toy. You don't need it, you want it. And there are many, many other toys available. Lots for rock bottom prices at car boots or charity shops.

There is literally no need to participate in this insanity.
