I know someone will be along in a minute to say you do you, no need to participate if you don't want to, yada, yada, yada, but I've just seen these in a shop window and
...wtf?!!!

What fresh parental hell is this?

North pole breakfasts, just more excuses to buy some more plastic

Tbf the breakfasts don't involve eating plastic

Given the levels of micro plastics in everything due to decomposing plastic tat, scientists might disagree 😆.

Dear lord. No no no to the fucking no.
Am I fuck doing a boo box. I dont even do Christmas Eve boxes or Elf on the shelf!!!!! Granted my oldest has only Just started reception, let's see if change my tune in time but I doubt it. I hate all this crap. My kids get spoilt rotten year round it gets far too much and im just not that type of person for this, I find it very contrived. I prefer spontaneous treats of events or buying things as rewards for good behaviour.

Exactly. Hate the over commercialism of every possible event or occasion ever which usually involves buying a shit load of single use plastic which goes to landfill within a week. But sure, its worth it for the perfect Instagram photo 🙄

Consumerism…..

These have been around for years and so have threads acting shocked about them they're nothing new. We don't do them as I personally think they're stupid but each to their own

I’ve never heard of them before and my kids are early 20’s so weren’t around when they were young.

CrispieCake · 09/10/2025 20:52

I have no idea, but Halloween is often at the end of half-term, so that sounds like a good idea to make the day a bit special

Surely the whole point of Halloween is that other people give them the loot?
I am not massively wild about my kids getting cheap sweets from complete strangers, so somehow making them forget about their loot by giving them something better works for me

The anarchic thrill that kids get from rushing around darkened streets with masks on is part of the essence of the Halloween experience. I ditch half the sweets (all the teeth-rotting ones) back into the bowl when we get back and leave them out for the older children and teenagers who come later (towards the end of the night, we always get one little twat who empties the entire bowl rather than taking a couple as per the sign, which saves chucking any out).

But the core experience is that of plundering unknown and untold riches. My DC is usually half-drunk on the thrill of it and always begs "Just one more street!" A tame "Here's a few carefully curated goodies that Mummy put together for you" simply wouldn't compare.

No doubt boo boxes full of Hallowe'en shit that will precede the First of December and Christmas Eve boxes that seem to be compulsory if you want to be a good parent these days.

What a load of old tosh. How did I ever manage to grow up in the 70s and bring up two children in the 90s without all this tripe?

opencecilgee · 09/10/2025 20:58

another reason for retailers to get us to part with our money

the shops are full of halloween themes shite st the mo

its out of control

they were not around last year 🤣

Alliolly · 09/10/2025 21:06

I don't mind the idea of it so much, but we have enough tat at home as it is. I couldn't cope with adding themed cups, pjs etc for every holiday.

And they'll get plenty of sweets Trick or Treating, I don't need to be adding to this. So not sure what I'd put in a Boo box 🤷🏻‍♀️

CrispieCake · 09/10/2025 21:06

As a child of the 80s/90s, I remember going to actual Halloween parties. We'd do bobbing for apples, eat scones dripped in treacle tied on a string (you had your hands tied behind your back) and play this mummy wrap game where we wrapped each other up in toilet roll. There would usually be some sort of gross touch and feel blindfold game as well where you had to touch disgusting stuff and guess what it was.

I'm going to sound like some sort of old fogey now, but somewhere along the way I do think we've lost a little bit of the joy of living.

This is the first year they've really come onto my radar (today actually) and I'd like to think I don't live under a rock. Though obviously some may disagree.

Yet another trend to jump on.

Christmas Eve boxes (because presents and loads of delicious food isn’t enough)
24 Christmas books
that nasty elf thing
Easter presents (not just a chocolate egg)
Back to school stationary hauls are a big thing on YouTube etc (because last years pens are no longer working!)

Consumerism has found yet another way to help people part with their cash cos “I don’t want my kids to feel left out!!!!!!)

Kids (and adults) don’t need more more more of everything. Plastic tat and treats at every corner because “a brief bit of happiness in a bleak world”……Enough already seriously. It’s wasteful and ridiculous.

Not sure what to put in it yet...
Start with a condom, I suppose.

We used to get a curly wurly on that day in school.

SomethingFun · 09/10/2025 21:25

Absolutely not. It’s more consumerist bullshit to post on social media. It would make more sense to do some kind on twixtween between Halloween and bonfire night but I imagine 2026 will be the year of the Halloween advent calendar and the boo box is just the softening up stage. 2027 will introduce the Jack O Lantern breakfast 😁

It was autocorrect and I couldn't be arsed to correct it because it's the internet and it doesn't matter.

You're a bit of an arse, aren't you?

opencecilgee · 09/10/2025 21:45

I totally agree that it’s a silly idea

Home Sense has had rows and rows of Halloween tat since July

cushions, tea towels, ornaments

bloody American crap customs

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 22:03

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 20:36

@ThatRealLemonCat do you do trick or treat then?

We do both

I wouldn't send my kids trick or treating if we didn't offer sweets to others, that's just rude. I 'd rather my kids didn't go trick or treating, but I am not stopping them!

I do them, I think it’s cute and a bit of fun. Typically give them at the start of the October half term and it’s full to new things to do - Halloween sticker books, painting, some of his favourite snacks, Halloween cup cake mixtures. It’s things I’d get him anyway but just nice to make it fun 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do the same at Easter (although a lot more chocolate!) and Christmas - just different themed activities.

Make it fun?

MAKE IT FUN???

what next, you'll be saying he doesn't work down the mine!

hard days graft& gruel. That's all a child needs!

ohfook · 10/10/2025 00:08

I don’t do it because it feels like an extra job I can’t be arsed to do, but my friend loves shit like this. It genuinely makes her feel happy. Personally I think we should all do what we enjoy doing and ignore what we can’t be arsed to do without it being a judgement on the people who are/are not doing it!
