I know I’m going to get a load of ‘never, were a screen free house’ but … especially if you have under 5s, what time does it go on?

Half four here. And it is on in the morning too.

My children would eat a snack, have a drink and watch tv for an hour straight after school/nursery/preschool. About 5pm they’d start playing and asking what’s for dinner. After dinner it was school reading, playing and bath. I have 3 kids so each one read with me for 10-15 mins and the other 2 played together or alone. On days when I was running late the older ones might read while I read with a younger one.

BedlingtonFloof · 09/10/2025 17:27

Whenever I feel like it really. Sometimes I’ll watch a film at 6am before work, sometimes I won’t switch it on til 9pm, if at all.

My question would be more: how do you even have time to watch tv in the morning? I am on MN from time to time, but I wouldn't have time to watch tv during the day. when do you get everything done?

The TV being on doesn't mean it's actively being watched.

We have it on all day like you'd have the radio on. It's background noise.

SepticPegsSepticLeg · 09/10/2025 17:28

3.30pm when youngest gets home from school. He then goes on his tablet and ignores it 🙄

If husband is home it's on all day. Wether he is in the room or not. Sodding thing is a game of turn it off turn it back on again. The electricity use is stupid.

Didimum · 09/10/2025 17:29

Whenever they want to watch it. I let them choose and don’t regulate screen time.

lazyarse123 · 09/10/2025 17:29

When mine were young we had tv on whenever anyone wanted so long as things got done. We didn't have the issue of tablets and phones way back when. I imagine that would have been different. All 3 of mine have grown up to love reading and all have hobbies and very rarely watch tv now. So I don't think it dud them any harm.

Interesting some don’t have it on in the morning at all, what do you tend to do instead?

Ours have only ever got up just in time to be fed, and scooted off to nursery/school.

ETA I get up earlier and get myself showered and ready, then it's all hands to the pump to get out the door thereafter.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 09/10/2025 17:30

Mine have grown out of it now, but CBeebies was our timekeeper in the mornings when they were little. Be dressed by bing, downstairs by Bluey, out the door after Peter Rabbit etc.

They’re not too fussed about tv, it certainly hasn’t made them obsessive.

CoastalCalm · 09/10/2025 17:31

Mine is on all day - I work from home and have it on in the background for ‘company’

Get ready to go to work and school?

What a strange question.

butterdish93 · 09/10/2025 17:32

Not in the morning but sometimes for 30 mins or so after tea. So maybe at 6. Not everyday tho as sometimes they’d rather play or whatever.
we don’t have a physical TV tho which probably effects how often they think about it/ask for it.

BettysRoasties · 09/10/2025 17:32

Mine are not toddlers anymore but currently. The tv didn’t go on till dh gets home.

The Alexa however all day long.

AgnesMcDoo · 09/10/2025 17:32

When they were little it went on when they got up.

now they are older it goes on when they get home from school

shellyleppard · 09/10/2025 17:34

I used to put the tv on while I was cooking the tea or if I needed some peace and quiet. Its been on at 5 am on holiday though.....😁😳😂 thankfully my little ones are now big ones but 8pm and it's my turn 😂

But I wouldn't have the radio on, genuine question, what's the point of a "background noise"? I get music, and even that all day would be too much.

SocksAndTheCity · 09/10/2025 17:38

Radio on during the day if I'm at home and TV on 6.30pm or so for the local news; mostly because it forces me into a bit of a routine, or I'd be faffing with odds and ends of work and admin and never get any dinner.

I'm not trying to be arsey saying this, but I have heard children with lots of background noise have less well-developed speech and language skills as they are used to tuning out. Children in quiet homes tend to hearken when things get said.

It's comforting. I'm autistic and find it helps me relax and regulate.

Correlation =/= causation.

Oh never. We don't watch tv.

Youtube goes on around 6.45 though. 😁

Well, if they get up at 630 which is typical they tend to come into my room for a cuddle and we watch CBeebies then. Breakfast is at 7. Then brushing teeth and getting dressed only takes around 10-15 minutes and I usually do that around 8.

It is variable; they don’t just sit vacantly in front of it but DS (4) enjoys Bluey and my little one (2) likes Teletubbies if she wakes up in time for it and Bing. Same in the evening, it’s weather and activity dependent and there are some really boring shows (dodges pup school, really) but Bluey is on and MoJo both of which my DS likes. They are watching JoJo and Gran Gran now Smile

Never in mornings. From about 8pm in evenings, sometimes earlier. I never ever watch TV during day myself unless I am ill. They are on ipads for a while after homework but again probably not before 5 or 6pm. Often much later as we are at after school activities

I can't get anything done unless I have a podcast on. Or music or the radio. I have to have something on in the background always. It helps me concentrate, weirdly. My head is too busy otherwise.

Mine are 4 & 6. TV doesn't go on in the mornings. If we have spare time then they'll get the toys out. Doesn't go on after school until reading books are done and goes off when dinner is done. So probably about an hour. Their tablets also lock at 5pm. After dinner they usually play in the garden or find something to entertain themselves with.

Weekends they get a lot more screentime but then they have swimming lessons and we try and get out as much as possible as they have so much energy. Because they get so little screentime in the week we are happy to allow more at the weekend. Their tablets run out of time after 2 hours every day so it's easier to monitor on the weekend to what additional screentime they get on the TV on top.

For us adults TV doesn't tend to go back on in the evening until the kids are in bed and we've done the jobs that need to be done like dishwasher
