Is this a full day for a plasterer?

Plasterer came to do some work with his mate yesterday, each charging £220 cash for a day's work.
They arrived about 8.30am and left at 2.45pm, no lunch break.
Plasterer came on his own today at around 8am and left at 1.45pm, no lunch break.
AIBU to think that this is not a day's work?

Well it’s more than half a days work so he can’t find in another half day job.

Potatoespotatoesagain · 09/10/2025 14:57

Travel, wholesalers for materials
no time to do another job elsewhere

signiffig · 09/10/2025 14:58

I’d always pay for a job not a day rate - I had to ask a painter to leave after he was clearly taking the puss

Same here.

That's not much help to me since I'm paying him for a days' work.
I suppose he can sit at home with his feet up for the rest of the day while I pay him for a full day!

Depends, has he done what you asked him to do ?

GasPanic · 09/10/2025 15:02

Depends I guess.

You might argue the second day was unnecessary, but depends whether they could actually do all the stuff on the first day (waiting to dry etc).

I assume they charged you for 3 person days so in total £660.

If they were plastering over a small hole in the wall I would think that was very expensive.

If they did a sizeable room and did it well I would be very happy.

MasterBeth · 09/10/2025 15:03

Once he's plastered a coat, what is he supposed to do? It needs to dry, surely?

ThrowAwayHooray · 09/10/2025 15:05

I paid £300 for 8hrs of work per day so £37.50ph.

You paid:

Day 1: £35.20ph
Day 2: £38.26ph

So it’s within the same ballpark. I’m in London if that makes difference.

He took your cat with him?!

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/10/2025 15:17

Assuming 9-5 is regarded as a day, with a break in the middle, 8.30-2.45 without a break is about half an hour or so less.

Plus travel time, it more than likely is.

Include travel time, and prep before arriving, and yeah, that's not too bad for a plasterer.

Lennonjingles · 09/10/2025 15:29

Whilst it’s not an 8 hour day, like previous people have said, maybe it’s all he could do in one day. My DH was self employed and always priced for the whole job rather than a day rate and there was a time when he had to collect DC from school so had to clear away from jobs 2.30pm to get to DC for 3pm.

Catwalking · 09/10/2025 15:33

well… you do the plastering then.
It’s got nothing to do with the specific time of day, strangely.
I believe there are things like having to wait for the different layers to dry or not before the next layer will adhere or not.

Redpeach · 09/10/2025 15:32

Travel time?

Yep, most trades will mentally count travelling time (and often picking up their labourer, popping to the builders merchants to pick up something they've not got) in when they're working out how long their "day" is.

No it’s not a days work

but why are you paying him in cash

Hes taking advantage but then so are you by aiding and abetting tax avoidance

You should get everything in writting, agree timings and pay into his bank account directly. Keep it legal and your right to fair treatment will be respected

Agree with this. Tax avoidance is how Reform are getting in - we need everyone to be paying what they are meant to if we don't want to pay more ourselves or have vulnerable sources like PIP raided.
