To take two weeks off unpaid to go on holiday?

I can either start my new job straight away or I can have two week off unpaid in between roles. I don't have many savings and rent a room in a flat but my new job will be very well paid so will be able to pay off any trip I took within a couple of months and still be saving a good chunk.

I can't tell if it would be a waste of this opportunity to get time off or if is wasteful. Everyone at work tells me to take the time off as the new job is going to be very full on.

In my 20’s, I did this a couple of times by putting the holiday on an overdraft. I know it’s not financially logical, but I knew that I could quickly pay it off and that the experience would be worth it. I didn’t have any other debts though so it was manageable.

But, I’d go for slightly less than two weeks, maybe 10 days - to give yourself time to acclimate after your trip/get over jet lag etc. and prepare for your new role. You want to make a great first impression.

If you don’t have much savings how are you affording the trip?

Credit card hence why she said she will be able to pay it off within a few months.

Do the holiday. But not for 2 weeks. Maybe 10 days. Give yourself time to sort out before the new job starts.

Yes, go for it, but try to be sensible regarding destination, accommodation, etc. As soon as you start your new job start paying it off.

God yes, I've always done this...I once told a job I had a 3 month notice period (I didn't) so I could take a longer break.....

go on the trip! You'll be fresh and rested to start the new challenging job. Congrats on landing a better position I hope you love it there.

Then it that case I wouldn’t be paying for a 2 week holiday. I’d maybe take the time off and a short break but I wouldn’t be putting a holiday on a credit card

I agree with you, better to be safe and she can save up for the holiday in a few months but unfortunately many people struggle to defer gratification and would rather put it on a credit card then wait and save for it.

I always take a gap if i move job, but then I've always got plenty of savings to do so. Not sure I'd borrow to do it.
