To mix these things on a jacket potato?

Butter, beetroot, blue cheese, creme freche, red onion and coriander?

I'm craving it, but can't decide whether it's flavour overkill and just have lovely melted mature cheddar.

oh the walnut addition sounds fabulous,

I am a simple creature, chicken tikka sandwich filler and strong cheddar cheese. perfect.

Butter+cheese+onion.
Beetroot and herb salad on the side.

GingerPaste · 08/10/2025 16:23

The more fillings the better. Go for it!

If you want it and like it....do it!

Skipping butter on a jacket potato (or with anything to be honest) is the worst advice I've ever seen anywhere on the internet.

You're right of course. I don't know what I was thinking. I take it back

Zimniy · 08/10/2025 16:45

YABU - blue cheese is the devil’s work

I concur.

I'm swapping the coriander for rocket ... but I'm going for it .... and after googling blue cheese jacket potato I found an ottolenghi recipe and am now also adding walnuts.

Michelin star spuds here I come 😂

Mmmm…would you consider finely-diced celery with the walnuts? Plus cheese, of course.

I'm another fan of squashing salad cream into your spud. Don't knock it til ya tried it.

I’m a shameless fan of salad cream. So piquant!

Love mayonnaise too, of course, but the zingy, mouth-watering sweet and sour taste of salad cream is very special.

A very discerning choice, if I may say so, OP.

But you will never beat:

Fluffy baked potato
Knob of butter
Black pepper (salt if you must, but the cheese is salty)
Grated very mature Cheddar cheese
Nice coleslaw

Never beaten in my opinion. The Food of the Gods.

Actually, you don't even need the coleslaw for it to be godlike!

Let’s just take a moment, shall we, to appreciate the humble potato. I cannot fathom what people in this country did before these marvellous tubers were brought to our shores by…er…Sir Walter Raleigh? It was cold pease porridge day in, day out, I think.

They are so versatile and delicious, and nutritious. I’ve always found it odd that in the 5-a-day campaign a potato doesn’t count but a portion of Heinz beans does.

My vegan daughter feels uneasy about eating potatoes because she feels it’s a low trick to steal the plant’s store of starch which it’s been accumulating in its tubers to sustain itself. It is sad, but I just cannot do without my potatoes.

Top post. I love the potato, in all its forms. I do like bread too, which was probably the main carby food eaten in these islands before the potato arrived, but I believe it was often very dense and dry.

Sorry to bring up such things but years ago I had a horrible stomach bug. When I as beginning to feel better the first thing I ate was a baked potato with just a bit of salt. No butter, just in case that created problems.

Oh boy, it tasted so good! I hadn’t eaten for days and the flavour of the fluffy, salty potato was really intense- it must have been due to my unusual hunger! A really good potato does taste delicious.

YABU
Beetroot has no place on any plate of food.

Oh my actual God, I can't believe you just said that.

Beetroot is awesome.

This sounds amazing! How was it?!

I bloody love a proper jacket potato. Had one last night with loads of butter (obviously), and half a tin of Aldis finest minced beef and onion in gravy. Referred to as lazy man’s cottage pie in our house 😂

When I was a student we’d go to our local cafe “3 jacket potatoes with cheese and coleslaw, 2 milky coffees and a pot of tea please”.

And you can’t beat a proper pub jacket potato with chilli con carne.

SoScarletItWas · 08/10/2025 18:47

My colour-wheel brain read blue cheese, beetroot and red onion and now I can’t unsee you eating a massive purple mixture.

I love that you got suggestions for taking things off and ended up adding walnuts. Definitely the Ottolenghi effect.

Oh and I am Team Salad Cream. Tater, butter, grated tasty cheese, sweetcorn, salad cream, salt and pepper on top. Could eat it every day.

Add sultanas and apple and you have a Waldorf jacket potato-lovely

SatsumasRock · 08/10/2025 18:52

That sounds amazing.

Although, when I was a student, there was a fast food place called Tasty Tattie. My favourite toppings were egg mayonnaise and haggis. Together. On the same potato. So im not sure my opinion counts for much.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 08/10/2025 18:53

I mean, I’m not sure SpudBros are going to be selling that combo anytime soon but the thing about jackets is you can put on it whatever you want! Everyone can pick their own fillings and be happy. It annoys the hell out of me that DS doesn’t really like them and DH isn’t that bothered either.

SafeSex · 08/10/2025 18:54

Crème what??

And compared to most fast food offerings a jacket potato with fillings is pretty nutritious and healthy. I’m not saying it’s low calorie- that’s different - but if you think of a greasy burger in a bun or an enormous doughy pizza it wins hands down in terms of vitamins, fibre and protein (from the fillings).
