Embarrassing bum problem

I’ve NC for this as very embarrassing but am a long term poster.

I’ve had issues with my bottom for years. Piles mainly which are manageable but do flare up if I have a dodgy stomach etc. What they have done is left me with lots of unsightly skin tags around my bum which apparently is very common because piles stretch the skin when they come out then it can’t shrink back. Who knew.

Anyway the whole area looks grim but pain wise has been ok. I keep clean. Nobody sees it so it wasn’t such a big issue for me.

But just lately I’ve started experiencing redness and soreness in the area (sorry tmi) not directly around my bum hole but a bit further out, still between the cheeks if you will but not something I think is linked to the piles. I can only describe it as a stinging pain, it feels like there is a scratch or a tear in the skin but when I look there’s nothing there. The skin is very red though.

Last night I went to bed feeling fine and when I woke up in the morning there was so much stinging in this area and the skin looked red raw. No idea why. I did walk a lot the day before so maybe it’s chafing? I really don’t know. It eased after a warm bath and I even put some of my toddlers nappy cream on. I will obviously see a GP if it doesn’t improve but I really don’t want to have to get my arse out if I can avoid it. Does anyone know what this might be or how I can ease it?

Likely either a slight skin infection, try Savlon or similar or a fungal infection try Canesten cream or similar. If no joy with that see GP or ask pharmacist for suggestions.

I did wonder if it could be some sort of skin infection. Can it be caused by chafing/rubbing?

Agree with canestan . It’s anti fungal and great for any rash in that area for you ( not your toddler !) I keep some in stock specifically for that reason .
it will have cleared by tomorrow and I find gives extremely fast results

Chafing and faeces from slight smearing ( sorry TMI !) combining

Sudocrem will help

Agree with other posters re cream.
While the NHS don't generally remove these skin tags I believe they can if they are causing discomfort/infections so it might be worth asking your GP about that in relation to the problems that they are causing you.

As you mention dodgey tummy and sore bottom you could consider if it's relevant to ask your GP about inflammatory bowel conditions e.g. the Calprotectin stoole test can be used to test for inflammation in the bowel.

Take a look at some symptoms but remember they vary for everyone.

You're a long term poster, but you've never heard of the General Health forum?!

Yes try Canesten and if it doesn't help, you may want to get it checked by a doctor in case there's infection. As much as I'm sure you relish the idea of showing your bum to the doctor!!

Loooper · 08/10/2025 14:56

The rash/sore bum is probably from sweat. Keep using the sudocrem, you could also try liquid talc. If it doesn't go away it could be fungal. As pp suggested use Canesten or Lamisil.

Sudocreme is brilliant
