Anxious about diabetes blood test

I had gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy and ever since my HbA1C has been slowly creeping up and remaining on the higher end of the normal range.

Was 39 in April 2025.

I had my blood test yesterday as I have been experiencing increased urinarion and thirst.

Usually the results are back from the lab update on the NHS App before 11am the next day.

I have called today and the receptionist has advised that they will likely be back tomorrow.

I am really worried about my results, just wanted a handhold really and was wondering if anyone else had gestational diabetes in pregnancy they turned into Type 2 diabetes.

My BMI is 20 and I am well within a healthy weight for my height ( 5’7 and 9 stone).

Many thanks x

Not type two, but I know a few who developed type one.

Not me personally but I had a GTT test 2 weeks ago so was asking questions incase I did have it and I was told that 50% of women who have gestational diabetes go on to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years so there is some link. I’ve got my fingers crosses for you!

@Jellybunny56 yes that’s what I am worried about the 50% of women who do go on to develop it.

Mine was caught by pure chance after 2 negative GTT tests.

I developed it at 33 weeks, I was induced at 36 weeks.

Thank you so much for your kind words, wishing you all the best with your pregnancy xx

My understanding from what I was told is that having a family history of diabetes & having a higher BMI are the two main things that would make you more likely to be one of the 50%, so fingers crossed it doesn’t end up being you!

Can I ask at what gestation you had the 2 negatives? I have some symptoms, and a huge measuring baby so under LGA (which was the trigger for the test) but had my GTT at 33 weeks pregnant and all came back normal. I wasn’t aware it was possible for them to come back negative falsely! X

@Jellybunny56 I don’t have any family history of diabetes fortunately and I have lost a significant amount of weight as my BMI was 27 when I was pregnant.

I had my 1st GTT at 26 weeks pregnant and it came back normal.

Two weeks later at 28 weeks I was in the pregnancy unit for reduced movements and a urine dipstick test picked up glucose in my urine and a 2nd GTT was booked.
The GTT came back normal surprisingly.

At 33 weeks pregnant I was in hospital again for reduced movements and again the urine test picked up a high amount of glucose.
The 3rd GTT picked up the gestational diabetes which I had developed in between the 1st GTT and the 3rd one.

Was a bugger lol 3 more weeks and I would of been OK.

If you do have any symptoms the midwives can check your urine cor glucose as it can develop anytime despite a normal initial GTT xx
