especially when they are in the middle of a shop? What's wrong with these parents? We all lose our tempers and children are like leeches, heck they'd suck you dry given half a chance, but to call your own child stupid - what's that doing for their self esteem etc?

I agree - I find it really offensive when I hear people calling their kids stupid. or tell them to shut up.

I prefer silly or daft which don't seem as offensive somehow.....

Umlellala · 04/06/2008 14:34

Gosh, before I had dd I would have thought it was awful. Now I think, you know what, that parent could have been SuperAmazingFab Mum the other 6 times they have been in the supermarket that week and that could be the ONE time they were too irritable and snapped instead of making it into a game (like we know they should have).

Divastrop · 04/06/2008 14:39

i prefer 'shut the fuck up' ,i find it works better than just 'shut up'

seriously, though,i hate hearing kids being called stuip.ive probably said it a couple of times when one of the dc has done something like run out in the road-ie 'that was a stupid thing to do' or 'you are not stupid,so dont act it!',but never 'you are stupid'

i find calling a child 'evil' far far wrose though.i have heard that a few times

was it me? id did call ds f* stupid today.

ok he was 16 and for some mad reason it is our joke of the week

YANBU I have now learnt(thanks mn) that it isn't a nice thing to say to a child. I am sure there are much better ways to correct them.

Mercy · 04/06/2008 15:13

Leogirl, you only heard the parent call their child stupid once (maybe a couple of times).

I think you are over-reacting tbh.

AbbeyA · 04/06/2008 15:19

If they are willing to call them stupid in the middle of a shop you have to wonder what they call them at home on their own.

Mercy · 04/06/2008 15:23

Maybe, but I know I am more likely to be short-tempered when out shopping with my two than at home.

I would have thought an 'abusive' parent is more likely to have a good public image.

southeastastra · 04/06/2008 15:28

i really don't think it has an effect on him. i don't call him stoopid all the time. just when he's stoopid which is alot of the time.

Chandon · 04/06/2008 15:31

I tell mine they are pains in the bottom, is that worse?

Divastrop · 04/06/2008 16:21

i dont assume people call their dc worse names at home.supermarkets and shops can be very stressful, and i agree with mercy-i am more likely to shout at my dc in a shop than at home.
