Gold Jewelry

One thing I've noticed over the last few decades is fewer women wearing gold jewelry.

Im not talking high fashion, celebs and catwalk, but ordinary people.

All the women I knew of my granny's age always wore chunky wedding rings, engagement and other dress rings as well as solid earrings, young women would have gold necklaces and earring as gifts for special birthdays.

Now the fashion for wedding rings is slim, you rarely see women in public wearing gold.

Is it a trend thing, that gold is old fashioned/crass, a safety thing where women are worried about wearing valuables in public, a finances thing that gold is more expensive now and money is tighter?

Or am I just in different circles and gold is as popular as ever?

Yabu - gold is as popular as ever
Yanbu - I've noticed this too.

It's a fashion, not more.

There are so many costume jewellery pieces small enough to be real, you rarely see women in public wearing gold completely disagree, but just glancing at them in the street, couldn't tell you if it was fake or not.

When I got engaged 25yrs ago I got a gold ring, I was told it was old fashioned even then, all the younger ones were getting white gold. I then got a gold wedding ring. Recently I’ve been told I did the right thing as gold is making a come back.

I’m honestly surprised at your post as I think it’s been a thing for 25yrs, and fashion is changing slightly to more gold being seen.

Sorry no it doesn’t. Especially if you actually know what your looking at 😉

Gosh. How patronising.

I still think platinum looks horrid. We are all entitled to our own personal taste.

Missey85 · 09/10/2025 14:31

I've never worn gold I don't really like it all my jewellery is silver

Nanatobethatsme46 · 09/10/2025 14:35

Its all been sold just to survive

Mrswhiskers87 · 09/10/2025 15:04

I have no idea but I’m in my 30s and only wear gold, including wedding and engagement ring. Chonkier the better!

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/10/2025 17:04

Gold is just tacky. Most people wear silver now.

You are 10 years behind I am afraid 😂
Gold is back, and has never been "tacky". Vintage pieces are mainly gold for obvious reason, hardly tacky for a start.

Some people are so rude on here, wear what you like and respect what other people like too.

no need for the negative comments

As I said above, the Royal Family would be surprised to hear this as the women mostly wear plain gold wedding bands. So do the (few) aristo women I know, however elaborate their engagement rings (not worn on a daily basis) may be.

Other PP have made similar remarks

I don’t think the royal family are generally dressing like the general public, or following fashion.

which means that gold - as in gold colour - is timeless. fair enough.

JaceLancs · 09/10/2025 19:15

I’ve always preferred yellow gold - although some of my rings have platinum claws and I do wear a bi metal watch
I think it’s back in fashion
Most of my pieces are antique as better value for money

ScupperedbytheSea · 09/10/2025 19:21

I've gone back to gold past 5 years.

Used to wear silver, because I thought gold was too old fashioned, but now I've completely switched. Love gold, and suits my skin tone better too.

I guess your grandmother meant that gold will always be saleable, or pawnable, if you urgently need cash. Wise woman!

Yes she did mean that exactly, and was and still is a very wise woman to this day! And she still has all her gold jewellery 😂 for my 18th she bought me a gold snake chain, or at least I always called it that, like a flat but flexible herringbone necklace. She had one and remember being very little sitting on her lap fascinated by how it moved when I played with it. I broke it recently and I’m gutted, need to look and see if it can be mended somehow 😭

A jeweller should be able to mend it, hope you can get it fixed - jewellery is a lovely gift for your 18th.

It really isn’t and they really don’t.

Yellow gold is tacky and chavy

My wedding engagement and eternity ring are all platinum as is my trilogy ring on my other hand

Amy necklace earrings or bracelet I have are all white gold or occasional silver but that tends to tarnish easily and looks awful

Oh.

When I think of gold jewellery, I think of antique gold, or classic gold jewellery. Understated chains and small pendants. Victorian rings. Classic bracelets. I inherited several gold chains and pendants, a Victorian locket and a bracelet from my Portuguese grandmother. They're pretty timeless (ok, admittedly I don't wear the locket, which has green and yellow enamelling on in a sort of Florentine pattern, but I do love it). My engagement ring is a diamond on a gold band - it's Victorian - less obvious sparkle but a pretty cut, and it was so much cheaper than buying a brand new one. I really enjoy having one with a bit of a life story!

When I married DH we both opted for gold wedding bands, both with a subtle Celtic plait inlaid into the band. Today, I'm wearing some subtle small gold ring-shaped studs that sit on the ear lobe, and one of my grandmother's chains with a gold pendant I bought myself many years ago from a country I used to work in.

Gold has been universally loved since humans started to work it in the Neolithic. It's valued and made into beautiful things all over the world and for the last several years. It's timeless and can be stylish rather than slavishly fashionable. But you think it's 'tacky and chavvy'? Ok.

As I don’t change my wedding band or important pieces to follow trends I prefer style to fashion

Edited

Everything you’ve described here sounds gorgeous!

poetryandwine · 10/10/2025 10:56

I think many haters of yellow gold are protesting too much.

Though I prefer it, I have a couple of lovely platinum pieces and share with some here that it’s all about personal preference.

That the words ‘chavvy’ and ‘tacky’ keep being bandied about concerning the metal with the most esteemed history makes me wonder what type of gold wearing folk these PP know. Many of the world’s most stylish women wear a plain gold wedding band.

Also, ‘chavvy’ is very out of date in modern circles. Using the word sounds insecure to me. Like you are casting around for someone you can look down on.
