School cooking lessons

School cooking price of ingredients!
Dc new to high school, cooking this week.
Cheesecake:
Butter £1.08
Biscuits £0.60
Soft cheese x3 £4.02
Strawberry £2.48
Cream £1.40
Chocolate £2.87

Other bits from kitchen- icing sugar, vanilla essence, tin etc.

Shocked at the cost tbh. Not a problem here but lots of families couldn't afford this fortnightly could they? I grew up in poverty and couldn't afford school cooking ingredients.

Whatever happened to peeling and chopping apples and rubbing butter into flour?

I meant crumble mix as in they provided the ingredients for the crumble (I assumed it was the butter etc although actually I dont know for sure!)

There are always issues with lesson length and what can be achieved in a (usually) double lesson. They may have the time for preparation, but not cooking, so it can be tricky when the child collects the dish at the end of the day. They also have to wash up and clean.

DD did GCSE, but was so horrified by the state of the equipment in school, that she refused to eat any of what she made and most ended up in the bin, which annoyed me greatly.

The school were so concerned about the cost of ingredients that when dd made a mistake in her cooking, her teacher lifted her frying pan and slammed it on her desk and screamed at her that she should be listening harder, scaring the absolute shit out of dd and leaving her shaking in fear.

We had similar.

The high school also has a lot of pupils on free school meals. They have removed the need for the school logo on things to make the uniform more affordable, and they are flexible with footwear too (completely black shoes or trainers).

I was surprised they didn't offer the option to pay at the start of the year/term and ingredients be provided.

We also had a number of lessons in a row (so every 2 weeks), where the dishes were all meat based ( mince or chicken needed) and they each included different herbs/spices etc that people may not normally have.

Year 10 now- don't miss it at all.
