Random car outside my house, what can I do?

This is a bit of a weird on. I live very rurally, everyone knows eachother and everyone’s business. Last week a car was parked outside my house. Not a usual thing but it’s street parking so not illegal. Except it’s badly parked, we get a lot of tractors etc driving past and they’re struggling to get past. I’ve been shouted at a couple of times by drivers thinking it’s mine. I’ve spoken to neighbours and it’s not their car and they didn’t see it arrive. The problem is, we live in the middle of nowhere. You sometimes get walkers but there’s no public transport, and even taxis are run by a local who isn’t online, word of mouth only.
so now I’m wondering if the car has been stolen and dumped here? It’s a very nice, new bmw. Is there a way of checking if it’s been stolen? I don’t want to call the police because it’s wasting their time, but the mystery of it is bugging me :)
any suggestions of what I can do? It straight infront of my house, hasn’t been moved in over a week and no one has been in it. I wfh and it’s straight outside my front room so I’d have noticed.

Report to 101. What harm could it do?

Netcurtainnelly · 08/10/2025 21:51

Someone gone on holiday or Just not using the car for a while.

Sorry no updates. Car is taxed and insured and too young to need an MOT. Not heard back from the police but guessing I probably won’t?

This happened to me, reported to the police and they came out the same day but tbf it was blocking my drive so they were more interested. They contacted the owner who turned out to be a missing person, a relative came and moved the car so it was better parked and apologise. They were grateful to have known where the car was and a couple of days later it moved so I was hopeful their son had returned to it but of course I'll never know if they just came back for it.

A bit dark… but are there any suicide spots near you?
Years ago a bloke was missing in our area, weeks later they found his car, which someone had reported as abandoned but police hadn’t followed up… they found a Suicide note inside the car… I can’t remember exactly what he’d done now, but couldn’t believe at the time that the police had failed to connect the dots of a missing persons car being reported as abandoned.

Hope it’s nothing like that here

Are you far from an airport?

I used to get this a lot when I was a councillor, with a particular road that was quite rural and empty. People would dump cars there, some were stolen. Report to your council or 101 police, as it could be a number of things (including, as PPs have said, a concern for the owner)

Phone 101 they’ll send out a PCSO.

I had the same thing, but live a bit less rural than you. I read an article that said this can happen as a pool car to criminal gangs, so I rang the police on the non urgent number, they looked up the registration, contacted the owner and it was moved within hours. Good luck

This happened in our village. I recognised the car - it was a courtesy car a friend had while his car was in the garage. When they hire company came to collect it, they just dumped it round the corner for weeks! Once my friend found out he got them to come and pick it up.

Is there anything on it at all to indicate ownership? A dealer name etc?

Did it get moved?

New BMW, badly parked. Screams stolen and dumped.

RandomCar · 10/10/2025 21:15

Just came to update, I went on the school run this afternoon and it disappeared! So I have no answers for who left it or why! Very frustrating, sorry!
