To think this is unfair?

A meeting has been organised at work for everyone to attend on a Saturday. It's quite rare that anyone works a Saturday. The meeting is four hours, yet we're only being given the four hours of toil. For me, with my commute, it's going to take a whole rest day away from me. There are a few others who have a long commute and it's the same. For most, the commute is a half hour each way, so that's an hour being taken from their rest day. AIBU to think work are being stingy?

Is it in your contract that you’ll sometimes have to work on a Saturday? If so then I don’t think they’re doing anything wrong, you wouldn’t usually get time back for your commute, where you live isn’t anything to do with them. If it’s not in your contract and your days of work are Monday-Friday, I’d question going to the meeting at all, or ask for the day to be covered by toil.

Upsetbetty · 07/10/2025 09:13

Yeah I would be sick I think…I’m not working or doing anything work related unless I was paid adequately.

GrandHighPoohbah · 07/10/2025 09:15

I guess it depends on the usual set up. In my job this would be unacceptable because Saturday isn't a working day for anybody. Do you sometimes work Saturdays? That would be more reasonable if so.

ConnieHeart · 07/10/2025 09:16

When you say it's rare that people work Saturdays, do you mean it does happen? Is it in your contract? If not you're under no obligation to attend & I'm sure plenty of others, with young kids etc, are in the same boat

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 07/10/2025 09:18

Could you do extra work after to make up the whole day and make the commute more worthwhile?

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/10/2025 09:20

Is it at your normal workplace?

Holdonforsummer · 07/10/2025 09:20

Unless your contract states work from home, I don’t think you can expect to be paid travel time. Is there a reason they have chosen a Saturday for the meeting?

rainbowstardrops · 07/10/2025 09:28

Why have they chosen a Saturday for the meeting? If my contract stated Monday to Friday, I’d be pissed off by missing one of my rest days.

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 07/10/2025 09:31

Another one asking why they've chosen a Saturday?

What's in your contract? About Saturdays AND location?

ComfortFoodCafe · 07/10/2025 09:38

If your contracted to monday-friday I would just tell them no.

CandleMug · 07/10/2025 09:41

You need to give more info.

If it’s in your contract you may have to work the occasional Saturday then it’s part and parcel.

If it’s your normal place of work then the commute is irrelevant and I wouldn’t be expecting them to pay, unless , as I say, they’ve changed the goal posts

CarrotCrusader · 07/10/2025 09:44

Occasional weekend work is in my contract. It's more the measly four hours for the meeting we get back with no bother from management that we're actually giving up a non working day. I'll be gone from home from 8am to 5pm on that day so that 4 hours meeting is taking away my rest day in essence.

Is the meeting at your normal place of work ?
because your commute isn’t their problem

Your commute is 2.5 hours each way?? How do you manage this on a normal day?? That’s insane!

If it’s in your contract then I don’t think you have any recourse. However, presumably you have contracted numbers of hours too? If these 4 hours take you over, then can you get time off in lieu?

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 07/10/2025 10:09

If it's in your contract then I suppose it is fair. Not ideal however.

Bottleplant · 07/10/2025 10:11

I don't think your commute is their problem, just as it isn't any other day.

Mumofteenandtween · 07/10/2025 10:11

Do you have work that you could be doing for the rest of the day? Could you ask if you can do that and then claim a full day of TOIL?
