Would you consider this gambling

My 9 year old grandson enjoys playing a card game. I've worked out how to incorporate some kind of reward with coins. He is a little bit slow with numbers and not really that used to how the UK currency is made up due to payments now being contactless.
Once we've finished playing the coins would go back in the jar ready for next time & he wouldn't get to keep them.
I have fond memories of playing cards with my gran as a child & winning pennies; but I am aware this could seem like harmless fun or it could actually plant a seed in his head for gambling.
Am I being ott & it's a bit of harmless fun that will help him with numbers?

I think it's totally harmless fun.

It was certainly normal in my home to play card games like Newmarket for pennies when I was growing up. And we did similar with my son.

It's no different really than playing board games like Monopoly where accumulating money is part of the aim of the game.

Harmless fun! And a great way to teach him about money x

Thank you both. And I'd forgotten about harmless games like Monopoly, it's just the same thing.

Totally harmless fun we used to play cards for Monopoly money when we were younger 😁

Yes you're fine OP!

It's fine. My son loved playing blacjack on holiday with me this summer, with a few coins and campsite shower tokens to spice it up. We haven't played since. He's not addicted.

The 2p fall machines in the arcades on the other hand.........

I agree. Using coins is just a token system in family card games like Newmarket - kids aren't risking their pocket money!

It’s perfectly fine. It’s not like he’s gambling away his pocket money!

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 07/10/2025 10:16

Totally fine.

we had a game coin jar growing up.

i suppose it depends what his parents think. Not us though.
