To think that the answer to mobile phone theft isn't more police?

But for people to be more careful?
You see them everywhere, users on their phones, often oblivious of what's going on around them. No wonder they're easy targets.
I know, because I do it myself. But after seeing footage on the news of thefts in progress, i'm determined to be more careful

So it’s our fault?

Nice victim blaming there!

randomchap · 06/10/2025 22:27

Literal victim blaming, well done you

FaceBothered · 06/10/2025 22:28

What a load of victim blaming nonsense.

If you don't know the area, the whole point of the satnav on your phone is to use it to see where you're going.

How about shit parents fix up and stop raising feral children?

I was robbed and my phone was stolen, the teenager had been following me for a while waiting for an opportune moment and threatened to kill me. It transpired in court, that he had done similar and worse several times before and more violent crimes. At no point did anyone involved, police, solicitors or judge, attribute any blame on me like you are. It was understood he was basically the underclass of society and destined to a life of criminality. Basically a waste of oxygen.

Ultimately these idiots only get involved in such crime due to the lack of police oversight. They feel confident that the police wouldn’t bother to investigate, like shoplifters do. They feel the risk is low.

Plus, I think more needs to be done about stolen tech being sent to China and the like. It’s organised crime that’s bigger than someone being an “easy target”. There should be more restrictions on these devices being exported, is there a valid receipt and chain of custody? Has the device been blacklisted?

YABU you should be able to use your phone in public without worrying about it being snatched from your hand.
I think being aware of your surrounding when using a phone is sound advice, but the air of victim blaming about this is not right.
More police wont make any difference. But proper action about regarding finding people's phones and taking action against thieves should be looked into.
I have heard of people tracking their own stolen phones and the police will do nothing even though the location of the phone has been given. In another case, the police did recover someone's stolen phone but would not return it as the thief had used it and giving it back to the rightful owner would have been in breach of the thieves' data protection rights.

I would like lots more prisons and lots more sentencing.
