AIBU to buy DS cheap glasses frames?

DS8 is autistic and has dyspraxia ( also suspected adhd )

He is constantly breaking his glasses from the opticians. It's only £20 for a replacement frame but when your buying a new frame literally every week it soon tots up

With winter coming that 20 a week would actually make a huge difference towards our gas bill.

So, these past 3 weeks I've started buying him cheap £2.50 frames from home bargains and popping the actual glasses bit out of the broken frames and into the new cheap frames. Instead of paying £60 ( and having to wait a week each time ) I've spent £7.50 and been able to fix his glasses the same day

I think I'm a genius 😅 my friend thinks I'm being tight. DS doesn't mind at all and when he's older and not as clumsy / angry ( sometimes they break from falls sometimes they break because he's purposely snapped them in anger ) then I'll start buying him proper ones again....

My children's birthdays on either side of Christmas so it's a really expensive time of year

AIBU

As not to drip feed I am a single parent and I don't work atm as I care both of my disabled DC. Not yet receiving DLA for either & don't receive maintenence from their dad

You are brilliant, your friend is a twit.

Seems genius to me. Kids who snap their glasses don’t get expensive ones back.

DDivaStar · 06/10/2025 07:51

That sounds great so clever. Means ds isn't without glasses for a week too.

As you say when he's older and can look after them he can have 'better' ones.

I don't see the issue but do your opticians not do free repairs?
I work with an autistic child and they have been told they can have their glasses repaired as many times as needed.

What a great Idea! Good thinking! Great example to set for your kid too. Resourceful. Ingenuity. Intelligence
Your friend has more money than sense

You need to make sure the lenses are correctly aligned in the replacement frame as it might affect his vision if they're not.

Shr3dding · 06/10/2025 07:57

As long as it's not affecting your sons sight your friend is either particularly stupid or has more money than sense, or maybe even both

Why does it even matter what she says, if your lucky enough to find frames the same size as the lenses of course you do it. Needs must

That’s genius if you can do it - great that you have found frames of exactly the same size. I guess the only thing to be careful of especially if he is rough with them is to make sure they are not loose enough to fall out. I assume the lenses are plastic but you wouldn’t want him to get injured. The other thought I had was that you do need to give a consequence to your son for breaking his glasses in rage. I wouldn’t be replacing them quite so quickly if he does that.
