Mr Frosty

Inspired by another thread! So many of us of a certain age have been denied a Mr Frosty in childhood, AIBU to think it’s astounding that anyone ever received one?! If so, did it live up to expectation or was it actually a massive disappointment? Such a feeling of nostalgia remembering circling it in the Kay’s and Gratton catalogue every winter!

I got my Mr Frosty as a joke present from my parents at 15 having asked for it year on year since I was really little. My mum really didn't want to buy it as she knew it would be disappointing crap that didn't work properly, produced miniscule amounts of ice and that I would use twice at most. She was absolutely correct.
Also on my most wanted was the Cadburys miniature chocolate dispenser where you put in 2p and got out a chocolate. I did get that one!

Oh God, yes, I had one of these. Why don't they bring these things back??

RadiatorDrying · 06/10/2025 12:32

I had one when they first came out. Close family member was in buying at Grattan so I used to get all sorts of things (like a Pound Puppy, My Little Pony Grooming Parlour etc before they were on general release.) We were actually a pretty poor working class Bradfordian family but I was toy rich relatively speaking due to Grandad having been at Grattan since the end of WW2. I think they used me as an unofficial product tester, paid in Hasbro 😀

Anyway…Mr Frosty was rubbish. The TV advert used to show a girl lightly turning the handle & the ice being crushed instantly. As if any 6 year old could convert ice cubes to slush like that. By Christmas night my mother was smashing ice cubes in a food bag with a rolling pin for me as I was so frustrated! The juice stuff was ghastly as well. Nothing like a lemon & lime Slush Puppy as I’d hoped.

I’ve known so many Gen Xers over the years who feel they had a deprived childhood due to not having a Me Frosty. And I can assure them they missed precisely nothing 😀

(I never got Hungry Hippos though & I’m still not over that at age 50 😀)

HappyGolmore2 · 06/10/2025 12:39

I was desperate for a Mr Frosty - never got one, as mum thought they were a waste of money! I’m not sure how she managed to stop me from asking Santa…
I also wanted an Evil Knevel but wasn’t allowed one as the kid next door had one and I could use his, and a Scaletrix, denied in the ground that a cousin had it and we could share… the injustice!
The Scaletrix turned out to be a bit boring but Mr Knevel lived up to the hype, amazing toy!
I also asked for - and received- a remote controlled car one Xmas despite our neighbour saying that giving girls ‘boys’ toys would make me turn out ‘funny’.
shes was right, gay as fuck now!

MyMilchick · 06/10/2025 12:41

haha, I always wanted one too but never got it

I wanted a Barbie
I got a Sindy.
She wasn't Barbie.
I'm still waiting, DM.

I preferred Sindy!

I desperately wanted an 'A'La Carte Kitchen' - the one in the ad where the little girl cooks her Dad a plate of swiss roll with baked beans. I asked for one for 3 years in a row, never got it, but my sister did!!!

My DH was reminiscing the other week about a board game from the 80s he used to love called 'Ghost Castle', so I have bought him an original 80s one from ebay for his birthday 😁.

I still have my Cabbage Patch Kid. Also kept my Fluppy (remember those?) and my Popple - they were they soft toys that could turn in and out of their own pouch.

My main love during childhood though was Sylvanian Families. My sister again got the majority of those. I did get a bakery though. Still got it.

I had Ghost Castle! It was brilliant.

TheatricalLife · 06/10/2025 13:03

I very reluctantly got my kids the Golden Coin Maker when they were little. It was the Mr Frosty of the time (2008 ish) and was equally as hyped, disappointing and shit. There's one for every generation!

The my little pony castle was another one. I had a fair number of ponies and I WANTED that castle.

Dad built me a castle for my birthday. Quite big, a large courtyard, a flat roofed tower on each corner, a gateway, and all covered in grey brick paper.

It looked like Colditz.

My friends loved it more than I did.

My daughter was absolutely desperate for a My Little Pony castle, but we were strapped for cash that year. I remember taking her into a toy shop to see the actual thing, rather than the tv ad. She was very disappointed and said 'but it's plastic... I don't know what she expecting. She didn't get it for Christmas either.
One year she wanted a 'poor little Jim' and I couldn't figure out what it was; she'd seen the ads. on tv and no amount of questioning got me any further. She also said it didn't matter if I didn't know what it was, because Santa would know... Cue weeks of trying to find poor little Jim. She was getting increasingly frustrated with me, and it was only when she added it was 'a poor little Jim from Ronco did it dawn on me she wanted a portable gym from Ronco, which was some sort of device that fitted under a door so you could do sit-ups. She didn't get one of those either...

DancingLions · 06/10/2025 13:20

I did have the Tomy Fashion Plates though and loved designing with those. I presume it was the cheaper version of the Fashion Wheel

I totally forgot I had the fashion plates too. Yes, it probably was cheaper as we were poor! That was actually one of my favourite presents ever!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/10/2025 13:39

I had an a la carte kitchen, cabbage patch kids and most of the must have 80’s toys. But never got a Mr Frosty, a space hopper or a lolo ball. (The ball with the plastic ring you jump on) I bought a space hopper as an adult. It was disappointing!

PansyPotter84 · 06/10/2025 16:35

🎶 MR FROSTY IS SUCH FUN!

HE MAKES TREATS FOR EVERYONE!🎶

So went the advert.

The advert that made it look really easy to make drinks that resembled slush puppies.

The reality was…somewhat different.

It was bloody hard work to turn the handle to grate the ice, and then the ice would
clump in the cup and adding a bit of syrup from the penguin bottle (which I recall was powdered?) didn’t do much to flavour it.

I had one.

What I wanted but never got was a Doctor Dreadful Food Maker.

It was probably a good thing I didn’t… I imagine it was probably gelatinised crap full
of chemicals (or maybe I’m just bitter!) 🤣

spoonbillstretford · 06/10/2025 16:39

Not bothered about Mr Frosty any more.

I'd like a fridge that produces crushed ice though.

BubblyBath178 · 06/10/2025 16:41

I was desperate for one and never got one 😢 My mean cousin had one and would never let me play with it, despite how much I pleaded.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 06/10/2025 08:16

I didn't get a Mr Frosty and also didn't get the money box that dispensed tiny bars of Cadbury chocolate.

Also wasn't allowed a jelly bag for school.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/80s-Retro-Style-Jelly-Bag/dp/B0D4Z5RLC8

I had the money box!

They were a bit pointless though as they only took 2p coins, which weren’t much money even in 1988!

That's just reminded me of my Nana. She had dementia in the late 80's and would give us 50p for Christmas and think she'd given us a lot of money.

We had to fib and say thanks Nana, I bought an album or a t-shirt or something otherwise she'd have been upset that she'd not given us enough to buy something decent!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 06/10/2025 17:43

My husband always wanted one as a child. I bought him one second hand early on in our marriage. Used it once. Thought the kids might use it. It eventually got rehomed having been used twice as they did want to try it and it was crap.

NebulousDeadline · 06/10/2025 17:48

I can’t believe no one has mentioned a Girl’s World. I desperately wanted one of those!

Shhhhh. Don't mention that too loud. My friends sister had one. One day she was out and we 'made her up'. But not with makeup. With markers and stuff apparently (we were v young). She was pissed. Still mentions it. And then a couple months ago her dad found the thing in the attic and sent a pic!!!

Lectei · 06/10/2025 23:15

I was desperate for one. Was never allowed one so I swore I’d get one when I was an adult. I didn’t in the end but my son started asking for one when he was little. I said no 😂

PotterHead1985 · 06/10/2025 23:19

Someone mentioned trolls. I had them (im assuming they got lost when we moved). I loved them.

Also had jelly shoes. Flats and heels.

Never had playdoh. I had Marla!!!

XenoBitch · 06/10/2025 23:21

We had one as kids.
I assume I am speaking for everyone here, but we basically just wanted to consume the syrup. The ice chips was a shit carrier for it.

TheatricalLife · 06/10/2025 23:24

I did have a FunFax which I absolutely loved. I felt really sophisticated! The stickers were great.
My friend group had an obsession with stickers. We loved going to a little stationery shop in the nearest town and buying the little sheets with different themes of sticker. We'd write each other letters with funky paper with wavy lines and stickers in different coloured pens. Such a lovely time.

I wanted Lego Technic, remote controlled car and Scalextrix.

I received, babie, doll and an educational crappy think called 'speak and spell' which had an American accent and spellings 🙈.

I LOVED my Speaker and Spell!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 06/10/2025 23:25

I told my husband about always wanting a mr frosty as a kid and never getting one. He bought me one! Well it’s the fiddliest price of crap ever! It’s so hard to use. Crushing the ice is nearly impossible and they don’t taste nice! Bless him for the thought though xx

Shoemadlady · 06/10/2025 23:36

I had one, it was absolute crap! You didn’t miss out 😂
