Astounded by trip to shopping centre today

I usually do my shopping online these days, but went shopping with a friend today to a big centre about 30 minutes away from us (I won’t name it incase outing).

Is it me, or has the minimum size stocked by the majority of shops gradually increased in recent times? I was asking shop assistants whether they had any size 6 stock and received blank stares half the time!

No wonder physical shops seem to be on the way out.

Needless to say, I’ll be sticking to online.

A pleasant experience aside from that though and lovely to see my friend so it wasn’t a wasted day.

Stealth brag post.

I used to do that with shoes when I was a skint student.

Could never get away with children’s clothes, though, even at my slimmest - just not cut for a woman’s bust and hips.

I find that now some of the children's clothes in a certain size, are much bigger than they used to be, years ago. The clothes have gotten more bigger.

There's a little independent clothing shop locally in my parents' village, and it caters for medium to very large sizes - of a range starting at 14 up to 36.. (!)

I am a bit surprised this size even exists, letalone has clothes at all for it. I mean. I guess I need to be more open minded but it's Norwich I'm in, not America 😬
Having said that, a friend who's a nurse told me that Norfolk is the bariatric capital of the UK apparently, so perhaps that may explain the clothes sizes! 🤔

Definitely a unique place that I described... and it does have size 36...it's definitely good it caters for larger sizes IMHO.

But I agree that small sizes should bd catered for too. I've only seen the smallest size as an 8, and very occasionally a 6.

Ranges in store have definitely decreased, very few items in petite or tall and almost nothing in maternity these days.

CrystalShoe · 04/10/2025 22:07

I have the opposite problem - I take a common size in both clothes and shoes, and for that reason, my size is very often not in stock!

British stock control is atrocious. It always has been. When I go to NY, they always have a range of sizes. But here, it's notable how often they don't have the right size. To the extent that the inability to keep a range of sizes in stock has saved me an absolute fortune over the last 25-30 years or so, since I became an adult.

The shop should have had at least one or two of OP's size. In these days of electronic and smart everything, you wouldn't have thought it'd be rocket science to have one or two extra of each size in the back, in addition to one or two of each on the shop floor.

Are your diamond shoes too tight too?!

Unnecessary and rude.

What’s with the bragging posts this evening? 🤣

Youcunnyfunt · 04/10/2025 22:09

Places to try: Next, Primark, Gap, Zara, H&M, TK Maxx

Lots of places do extra small / petite sizes but obviously stock varies. Designer labels also go much smaller and shopping teen depts. Bit difficult when you’ve got a bust to accommodate as it affects the cut of clothes and how it drapes. As a teen I got a lot of stuff from Gap - they went down to US 0 and 00 in some lines back in the 00s, not sure if they still do (I’m def now a 8-10!). Hope that helps…

LadyKenya · 04/10/2025 21:47

I am a size 8, and do not refer to myself, or others of a similar size as 'teeny tinies'. It sounds a bit mean to me.

It's a childish, ignorant insult normally levelled at those under a size 12.

Epidote · 04/10/2025 22:11

Ddakji · 04/10/2025 21:02

That’s because vanity sizing means that a size 6 now is what was an 8 or 10 back in the day, and stores always had them.

Correct, an actual size 6 is and old 8. It changes about 20 years ago.

Apologies for anyone I’ve offended…I wasn’t expecting to read the digs and I appreciate MN deleting one of the worst comments.

If you are insecure about your weight, then rather than take it out on people online, you could always try to do something about it. Diet, exercise and discipline. Heck, there are even jabs available now!

I saw nothing offensive in it.
I’m sorry people reacted so poorly. ❤️

Gosh, how frightfully awful for you. Please take good care of yourself and allow yourself time to heal.. Thoughts and prayers. You got this. Living your best life.

I feel your frustration Henrietta82! I spent an afternoon last week trawling Oxford Street for a size 10 Petite trouser suit to no avail. Finding a decent quality petite brand is hard enough (no one stocks anything Petite where I live) but to discover I couldn’t even get one in London was very disappointing. All I bought was a £4.99 pack of hair slides for my grandaughter - cheapest shopping trip there ever!

Would this suit you, bouncy d?

It’s not rocket science is it - if they stocked less of those sizes, they’d have space for smaller ones? Have I missed something, sorry if so.

Maybe they did stock them but they get bought up quickly?
I think it's the law of clothes shopping isn't it? Finally find something you like and they don't have it in your size. You won't notice the dozens of things they do have in your size because you don't like them

Lesina · 04/10/2025 22:16

What are the actual measurements of a size 6? When I was 18 back in the 80’s I was considered slim with an 18inch waist: I was a 10… what is a 6 now? I’m thinking skeletal?

Rosedreaming · 04/10/2025 22:17

Harrietta82 · 04/10/2025 20:58

Clothing - with the right brand/style I can sometimes get away with a 4 but there was no change of finding that today! The joys of being a teeny size I guess, I’ve got genetics to thank for that!

I think you've edited something picking at people who wear bigger sizes out of your posts but you do sound a tiny bit obsessed with yourself.

I'm a 6 - 8 and lots of shops do size extra small which usually works. I find size 6 often enough and when it's not available I try an 8 and either get that if it looks good or if it's a little big I know I can order it online. Honestly I find there are more commonly smaller sizes available than size 10, 12, 14 etc. shops stock more of what sells well.

I was a 6 about 20 years ago, I can’t remember my measurements other than wearing a 30 or 32 bra size.

It’s the other way round - a 6 now was an 8 or 10 in the 80s. It would have been a very small size back then.

Yousay55 · 04/10/2025 22:21

Hollister has size 6 quite often.

Chick981 · 04/10/2025 22:23

As others have said, I don’t think shops have ever typically sold lots in a size 6, I’m guessing there’s not the demand for it.

B it no get that it’s frustrating. I’m a size 16 and anything I like seems to be sold out in that size in the shops, probably because size 16 is very common. I literally only ever buy clothes online now, way more an enjoyable experience than having to choose between whatever is in a shop in your size.

bouncydog · 04/10/2025 22:24

Thank you - I tried Hobbs which was a good fit so planning to order when I get home in a couple of weeks. Will also try Reiss as just what I’m looking for. I get so frustrated as the sizes of certain brands seems to have changed and not all of us have tiny waists, big thighs and short legs if we’re short! Appreciate your help.

Then don’t use a phrase that signifies jealousy. That’s literally what you did.

You were thinking of the phrase “first world problems.”

It’s a misogynistic trope that women should be jealous of a dress size, a literally meaningless number. Please let it go.

OP you’re easily astounded! But I find the sizes so random that I just look for an 8 that looks on the smaller end. I’ve got everything from 6 to 12 and the waists are broadly similar, just different brands.

MsCactus · 04/10/2025 22:26

How long have you been size 6 for OP? Is this the first time? I remember there never being any size 6s back in the 90s and noughties. This isn't a new thing!

There are also v v v limited shops that even stock a size 4. The biggest and smallest sizes are less common and so a nightmare to find, everyone knows that. Not sure what the point is of this thread
