Can someone explain this to me (Vinted)?

I have a 4 year old who has a tonies box*.

I’m trying to get her different tonies for it. New from Amazon or any shop are £14.99. The ones I’m seeing on Vinted (either used or brand new) are £10 to £13. With the odd one being around £7 but faulty.

By the time you add the delivery and Vinted fee they are not worth it.

Can someone explain why would you consider buying this on Vinted??? Am I missing something?

I know this happens on other items but this is the first time that’s I’m consistently seeing it and I cannot see how it’s worth but clearly a lot of people are buying them this way…

*for those who don’t know what it is, consider it like a music box that works with a little figurine called tonie.

I know what you mean. I see lots of things listed that are cheaper on Amazon. I don’t understand either!

flyingsquirrelsagogo · 04/10/2025 13:59

When I see this kind of thing I’m often tempted to message the seller to say that the item could be bought cheaper new. I never have though!

TheLette · 04/10/2025 14:13

Because people don't take into account the extra fees when pricing, or because some items are old and can't be bought new, so people will pay a bit more for them. Same with Yoto cards, which are similar.

FloozingThePlot · 05/10/2025 09:25

Send an offer for what you're willing to pay. There seems to be a culture on Vinted of listing things for more than you're willing to take so that you can appear to be giving the buyer a bargain when you send or accept a lower offer. It is very bizarre.

As both a seller and a buyer it drives me a bit potty. My inbox is cluttered with sellers sending offers - just list the item at the bloody price you're willing to accept! On items I'm selling I get sent stupid low ball offers, despite my things being realistically priced factoring in the fees and postage, because that seems to be the culture.

Still, it's quicker and easier than ebay and less CFs than FB marketplace!

Sometimes people list multiple items, so if you’re buying 5 cards at £10 instead of £15, and one set of postage costs it will work out cheaper.

QuickNameChange22 · 05/10/2025 09:35

I don't get it either, I've often found it with Lego. I know Lego holds it's value really well, but why would I pay £20 for Lego Dobby on Vinted (£24 when you add the Vinted protection and delivery) when I could buy it for £18 at B&M or a million other places?!

modgepodge · 05/10/2025 09:38

Are they ones which are no longer available? There’s a set of Enid Blyton cards which would have been no more than £30-40 new which apparently for £200 when they come up now as they’re so rare!

Other cards generally sell second hand for only a couple of pounds less than what they were new, so what you’re saying about tonies is similar. I guess if you don’t have amazon prime you’d have to pay postage there too so vinted would still work out a little cheaper.

Worriedalltheday · 05/10/2025 09:40

I’m on the Yoto Fb group and it’s the same there. So many people have questioned this as well. They sell cards on there for just a pound less and with delivery it’s not even worth it.

I have done that! For clothes. No response from the seller. Did not bother going back a few days later to check if price had gone down.

CeciliaMars · 05/10/2025 09:43

My kids had Yoto players but I found it insanely expensive to keep buying the cards, and like you said, they're no cheaper on Vinted. We gave up and now they have an Alexa each in their rooms, set to Amazon Kids (we have a family membership) and they can listen to stories, music and the radio. So much better and cheaper!

Mydadsbirthday · 05/10/2025 09:47

Just offer half the price of what you could buy it for. They will probably accept.

KatyN · 05/10/2025 09:51

Vinted isn’t just about saving money, it’s also to reuse items. In this case you are paying an environmental tax

(nah I don’t buy it either)

Moltenpink · 05/10/2025 09:54

I just clicked on one randomly to see what you were looking at, and that seller had more listed with a 15% bundle discount, plus obviously you would pay less postage. Don’t forget to check that. They look fun!

lampshadez · 05/10/2025 09:57

Are they sold out elsewhere?

JollyHostess101 · 05/10/2025 10:33

I kind of get the mark up ont he American ones or discontinued but the rest it’s just bonkers!!

If you set your filter to max £8.00 you can sometimes find a bargain I’ve done recently…… but you’ll also see lots that have been chewed by dogs and people still want to sell them 🤣

TheFoodLife · 05/10/2025 13:47

Every time I favourite something now on Vinted it seems like I get a cheery message offering me a discount and the news that they are about to post things NOW. It’s a bit off putting really.

Allswellthatendswelll · 05/10/2025 14:10

I really like buying second hand but with toys it's often not worth it on vinted and better on marketplace etc! I only buy anything on vinted if I'm bundling it now so I can save on post.

Bubblebather89 · 11/01/2026 07:06

I am thinking the same thing! We bought a tonie box for my son for Christmas. I thought I’d maybe get a few tonies on vinted but they are almost all around £10-12 so it’s not even worth buying second hand. Might as well buy brand new. I could understand if they were tonies that had been discontinued but all the ones I want are still for sale on the tonie website and multiple other places so it’s not like they are hard to find! Who’s buying them for basically full price or even more with postage?! It would make sense if they were around £4-5 used.
