Can't use my right arm

Last night I started getting sudden, sharp pains (a bit like cramp) in my lower right arm and hand. I struggled to sleep last night, the pain kept waking me up. It felt slightly easier this morning but the pain has come back since I started using it/lifting it up.

I Haven't had any obvious injury prior to this. No bruising but it does appear slightly swollen. I've taken ibuprofen but it's made no difference. I can't use my arm at all now without severe pain. It's too late for a GP appointment (our surgery is still using the 8am scramble system) so
wibu to go to the walk in centre?

Probably a good idea. Minor injury clinic if you have one.

TheWonderhorse · 03/10/2025 14:30

Um, probably yes. I would want that checked.

YANBU. Walk-in centre is sensible for this. It kind of sounds like you might have a trapped nerve.

RampantIvy · 03/10/2025 14:32

I don't want to alarm you but it could be the sign of a stroke. This definitely needs checking.

ExtraOnions · 03/10/2025 14:32

Trapped nerve … or something muscular-skeletal. I would imagine a walk in centre will advocating pain-killers / rest / warmth / cold .. be quicker using the NHS website for advice.

Of course you should! FFS. There's clearly something wrong. Why would you put your health at risk by not going?

CheeseandGherkins · 03/10/2025 14:37

Yes get checked out asap. This happened to my ex-fil and the next night he had a stroke.

Remind me never to come to MN for medical advice. If had you told me that I'd probably have a stroke on the spot.

I'm not sure a stroke can be preempted anyway.

I get this quite a lot, its a trapped/compressed nerve around my shoulder/neck. Causes hand/forearm numbness, tingling and shooting pain particularly at night. I find that sitting upright in bed and rolling my shoulders as far back as possible until they crunch unlocks it and feeling starts to come back pretty fast.

That said, i know what it is for me - you should still get it checked out.

It could be nursemaids elbow. Basically one of the ligaments slips out of place.
Did someone pull your arm, or did you lift something heavy the day before? It's quite an easy injury to get, and easily fixed.
