Day 1 of holiday. Hell.

This will come off really bad I appreciate that but sod it I have to speak my truth.

Day 1 of our family holiday we came to Greece. Have been excited for it. It’s all inclusive which is our second time, last year we did all inclusive and same thing I hated it. Don’t know why I thought it would be different but anyway.

I hate it. The hotel is just crap. The clientele are typical of what you would expect at an all inclusive and I just seriously regret it.

The thing is, I get I’m being a snob. Let’s be honest clearly we have the same budget as these people I’m slagging off (100k combined income) so should probably be a bit more humble, but I can’t. Every fibre of my being feels like I’m not built for this. I want better. I want luxury. I’m sooooo much more at home at high end places, where as the people here would probably feel uncomfortable there and like this better.

is anyone else like this?

What do I do, just avoid all inclusive from now on and stick to nicer hotels but just breakfast, eat out and explore more?

What do people do who are like me but equally don’t have the Dorchester budget?

100k is at least Prosecco not lemonade and beer!

holidyas have gotten so expensive I remember you could get 4 star Caribbean for under 1000 pp

ImFineItsAllFine · 03/10/2025 12:13

OP it sounds like you'd enjoy AI somewhere long haul - Caribbean, Maldives etc

TreeDudette · 03/10/2025 12:18

I'm a snob, we do self catering - pretty little Air B&Bs and I either cook or we eat out. AI is not for me, I don't drink and I don't like people!

ChristinaW16 · 02/10/2025 21:37

You sound awful , sorry..truly snobby.
You're on holiday - a luxury out of reach to many people..get a grip and enjoy it
.

Oh she sounds fab, I’m a snob op , what that actually means is I don’t want to be round scummy poorly behaved people who have loud vacuous conversations. I want quiet to get on with my Times crossword!

but you are slightly unreasonable as you are on the wrong holiday for you. That’s on you.

MyLimeGuide · 03/10/2025 12:24

Go and find some dramas... drink to much get into arguments with other brits etc, flirt with some waiters, make it more interesting...then report back to us 🙏

Franpie · 03/10/2025 12:24

I have no idea why anyone goes to AI hotels. Trapped in the hotel all day and night to get your moneys worth eating shit mass produced food.

YABU because you knew what they were like and still booked to go again!

Your post seems designed to be inflammatory.

Telling us your income doesn't tell us your budget for your holiday.
You don't complain about anything specific, you just focus on vague stereotypes.

Give some actual information and people will be able to give you actual advice

Yes, you’re right. OP doesn’t actually want any advice. Just being goady and slagging off AI holidays.

Who do you consider to be rough guests?

As a general rule of thumb, the more tattoos the rougher the hotel.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/10/2025 12:53

MrPickles73 · 03/10/2025 08:33

Our seriously loaded and posh friends don't stay in hotels or rent villas they stay with friends or in family holiday homes. They don't go anywhere near the general public.

Odd they would choose to stay with friends rather than rent a villa. So restricting. But maybe that’s how they remain loaded - holiday at someone else’s expense!

You said it , so I didn’t have to! Also blokes who come down to breakfast shirtless and are on pints at 10.30 am -

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 03/10/2025 13:12

Going to an all inclusive hotel would be my idea of Hell. Try self catering at a holiday let next time.

I've never understood why anyone would even want to do 'all inclusive', it always seems like an idea of sheer hell to me. I like to pick and choose where I go, what I do and what/where I eat. Having no choice in these matters, how is that a holiday? It makes no sense. I'd honestly rather stay home. For me, it's fool me once, shame on you fool me twice..... Sorry OP.

They don’t lock you in. We were all inclusive on honeymoon because the adults only hotel we liked the look of was entirely AI. We went out every day and ate out whenever we felt like it.

Folks views are funny and outdated…

I have 4 tattoos (not visible day to day) and a household income of >£300k

Have had 2 AI hols this year and am partial to a 10:30am cocktail.

Am not a chav in the slightest!

Luckyingame · 03/10/2025 13:24

Yes, OP.
I'm like this. Haven't done such holiday in 10 years, husband and I rather stay in Britain.

Holiday lets are very unpopular in many parts of Europe (and increasingly the UK) because they contribute to the housing crisis and price local people out of their communities.

I’ve made a commitment to only stay in hotels and purpose built holiday accommodation from now on as I don’t want to support this. AirBNB etc are destroying communities.

There’s been lots of protests especially in Spain.

There have always been villas for people to holiday in. I've been going to villas for over 30 years.

AI ruins communities too. Restaurants and local shops close, people have go to work in hotels instead on low wages with no autonomy. Lots are owned by foreign investors who treat the workforce badly. Food is imported because its cheaper so local producers lose out.

True. The Cornish hate second home owners because of this and I do appreciate locals being pissed off about it.

However, I believe in capitalism and think people have the right to do what they wish with their own property.

Personally, I'd rather stay home than have to share my space with other people, so holiday rentals it is.

Midnightlove · 03/10/2025 14:04

ginnybag · 02/10/2025 21:50

You're maybe picking the wrong destinations.

Try - where haven't you heard lots of people going to?

Or cruises, and really research the cruise lines. When you have dress codes, it does seem to filter the crowd....

I'd have to disagree.. p&o have dress codes and formal nights, it's full of drunken riff raff in cheap suits thinking their something special. Disney have no dress codes and it's the most relaxed cruise ever, don't think I ever saw a drunk person onboard

Clockface222 · 03/10/2025 14:09

I don't understand why anyone would want to go all inclusive in Greece given that the local tavernas are so good. Personally I would rather avoid other people all together and book a villa. I didn't see any British people at all the last time we went to Greece other than at the airport.

If the food arrangements are ruining your holiday, you need to concentrate on other things. No nice places to visit, good books to read.....You'd be better off going to a small hotel Italy and eating out. You dont sound like you have much initiative.

They don’t lock you in. We were all inclusive on honeymoon because the adults only hotel we liked the look of was entirely AI. We went out every day and ate out whenever we felt like it.

There’s a big difference between booking AI because that’s the only option in order to stay in the hotel you want to stay in, and you just do what you normally do - eat out every day, explore the local food scene and night life, leave the hotel during the day and travel around an area etc. - and the kind of big AI resorts where the whole point is to have everything on site and paid for upfront so you have every meal and drink there, stay in for the evening entertainment, and spend most of your time around the pool, as does everyone else who booked the resort. As others have said, the latter is in no way a holiday to me. I’d rather slum it in a hostel on a city break than do that kind of trip. But each to their own, of course.

Stay at home. Pot noodle. Sorted.

CheeseWisely · 03/10/2025 14:34

@Crushed23 But the only difference is the attitude of the guest surely? I suppose there'll have been people staying at our honeymoon hotel who didn't leave the resort between arriving in and leaving the country, but we didn't see much of them as we weren't there much. Likewise the OP has free will to leave her holiday resort if she wants to, given she isn't 'the type' to enjoy it, despite having booked it, twice.

Even if you've spent every last penny on the package and can't afford a sandwich and a can of Fanta Limon out and about for lunch, you can go out and explore on foot between breakfast and lunch and then again between lunch and dinner.

SharpMintUser · 03/10/2025 14:41

You sound like such a dickhead. “They wouldn’t be as comfortable in luxury as me”. Given you can’t afford it, why do you presume this?
