Are there any blood pressure meds that don't cause fatigue? WIBU to ask GP for specific type?

I think I'm going to be started on BP meds today after some very high readings.

I had BP meds for a while in pregnancy which were ok I think then a few years later I had something for a few months that gave me extreme fatigue and general unwell feelings. Possibly Amlodipine?

Anyway, I was diagnosed with post viral fatigue after a really nasty infection in the spring and I'm barely coping, functioning at about 30% of this time last year. This is very difficult as a lone parent with a child with additional needs. On the positive side I am better than 2 months ago so I think I'm recovering albeit at a snail's pace.

I imagine there are a lot of factors to consider and I think there are a lot of different meds used to treat blood pressure.

Do you have experience of BP meds with few side effects or which ones might be more or less associated with fatigue?

WIBU to ask the GP to prescribe something least likely to cause additional problems for me?

Following, as I'd like to know too.

Enrichetta · 02/10/2025 10:59

Of course you should discuss this with your doctor. But you’d also want to inform yourself about different options. The Mayo Clinic website has good information.

I take Lercanidipine and Ramipril. Neither make me feel tired. Lercanidipine is a newer calcium channel blocker which seems to have fewer side effects than the older ones.

LoveSandbanks · 02/10/2025 11:07

I take losartan and I’m sure that doesn’t cause fatigue. I’m constantly knackered anyway.

I’m the same. I tried Amlodipine and it made me feel spaced out and dreadful

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/10/2025 11:50

I’m on Amlodipine and Lisinopril and it doesn’t cause me any issues at all. Lisinopril didn’t work on its own, but adding Amlodipine sorted it.

ninjahamster · 02/10/2025 11:56

I take amlodapine and losartan with no fatigue.

FiloPasty · 02/10/2025 11:58

I have thyroid issues too so am usually fatigued but have started amlopedine without issue.

Weepingwillows12 · 02/10/2025 12:00

I take amlodipine and ramipril. Ramipril have me a cough but no fatigue. I have been feeling rubbish since starting amlodipine 6 months ago but that was coupled with taking on a super stressful promotion, some health issues and putting on a lot of weight in a short time coupled with reducing exercise so can't put it down to the tablets although now wondering if it's contributing in some way ..

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 02/10/2025 12:01

I take Losrtan and am always knackered. But AFAIK its not related. If it is the dr has never mentioned it.

HostaCentral · 02/10/2025 12:01

I'm just on Losarten. Amlopidine was dreadful for me, so many side effects, completely reversed all the benefits of my HRT.

Losarten, no side effects at all, and a lovely BP of 125/70 now.

BlissfullyBlue · 02/10/2025 12:03

I’m on candesartan. I take it just before going to sleep and have no side effects whatsoever.

FancyCatSlave · 02/10/2025 12:06

Ramipril and Propranolol here with no noticeable side effects. I did have a slight cough with Ramipril which has resolved itself.

WindDothBlow · 02/10/2025 12:06

I'm on Bisoprolol long-term, have been for over 10 years. Works well with no side effects, except for a touch of Raynaud's in the winter.

Anothernony45 · 02/10/2025 13:23

Thank you so much this is really helpful.

Enalipril made me feel really dizzy and unwell. Amlodipine is fine as long as I take it at night, otherwise I feel tired and have painful leg swelling throughout the day.

lazyarse123 · 02/10/2025 13:33

Dh takes Bisoprolol and Candesartan he hasn't noticed any problems.
He had a stroke which has affected his sleep but he's been on BP meds before then so not connected.

VeryQuaintIrene · 02/10/2025 13:49

I'm on olmesartan (US - possibly called something different in UK?) with zero side effects

BadActingParsley · 02/10/2025 13:51

MyGP said they start people on Amlodipine because if you can tolerate it it's a good one. I couldn't at the dosages I needed so I'm not on Amlodipine and Ramipril. I think I need to go back though as I am quite knackered.

Growlybear83 · 02/10/2025 14:20

I’m normally very sensitive to medication but I’ve been taking amlodipine for 18 months now and haven’t had any side effects at all.

Greybeardy · 02/10/2025 14:22

there are well established guidelines for managing BP based on age/presence of diabetes/racial background because the different drugs work better for different combo's of those factors. If it were me I'd start with whatever the normal first line is and take it from there.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2025 14:24

I felt very tired for about 3 weeks and then BP settled and I felt better than I had for ages.

Lercanidipine works the same way as Amlodipine but with much less leg swelling. Just in case you want to try something different.

Jellifer · 02/10/2025 11:47

I couldn't get on with Amlodipine, it made my legs swell and gave me stomach ache. Felodipine was slightly better but the pharmacist recommended Lercanidipine and it's perfect for me.

Aquestiontoponder · 02/10/2025 16:11

I'm in my thirties and been taking Ramipril for the last year. It doesn't make me sleepy.
