Neighbour has blocked hedgehog holes in the garden?

staceyslatericeskater · 02/10/2025 00:14

My next door neighbour has blocked the hedgehog holes on our shared fence.

The holes were already there when we moved in which was done by the housing developer.

My cat was pooing in her garden and roaming there and from what I understand she didn’t want her toddlers stepping on the cat poo.

Is this even legal?

You blame the neighbour for trying to get rid of your cat and it's poo?

Kimbap · 02/10/2025 00:19

Cat poo is disgusting. I’d have done the same as your neighbour. I’m not a lawyer but I can’t think of any way it could be illegal.

Longjongold · 02/10/2025 00:19

Is this a reverse? Lol.

You didn’t have an issue with your cat pooing in her garden even though you knew she didn’t like it, but you have an issue with her blocking the holes?

You sound pretty selfish no idea if it’s legal or not for them to have blocked the holes. Either way I can’t blame them.

TheatricalLife · 02/10/2025 00:26

After putting up with my neighbours cat shitting on my gravel drive and even by my front door for months I can fully understand why she's done it. It's absolutely disgusting. My other neighbour now has to put up with the cat shitting in his beautifully planted flower beds. He has to get dog poo bags and fish out the shit almost daily.
I'd imagine this is a reverse, right?

RedNine · 02/10/2025 00:42

Rake up one of your borders into a fine tilth so that your cat has somewhere to do their business on your property. Or place a cat tray filled with soil in a corner of your garden.

You could put down gravel if your cat prefers that.

SabrinaDontYouKnowDevin · 02/10/2025 00:46

If I was your neighbour I'd also tho I your cat and it's shit can get fucked sorry

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2025 00:49

Give away the cat. Save the Hedgehogs.

Job done.

Pudmyboy · 02/10/2025 01:15

Unless you have a towering high fence then blocking the hole won't deter your cat, but I can see her point about your cat using her garden as a tray. Do you have a tray for your cat to use, or as has been suggested, prepare a patch in your garden for the cat to use so the neighbour's garden is saved from your cat's poop at least?
Does your neighbour understand the hole is intended for hedgehogs?
Actually they need very little space to squeeze through (I have a regular hedgehog visitor) so the hole could be made too small for the cat but still be enough for a hedgehog.

5foot5 · 02/10/2025 01:19

Oh dear!

I am a big champion of hedgehogs and have built a tunnel in to our garden to facilitate hedgehog access. However I can see why your neighbour would be annoyed.

From my observation however, the cat can probably access your neighbours garden tunnel or no tunnel. I have wildlife cameras set up in my garden and several cats get in without using the hedgehog tunnel, and we have a six foot fence.

If your neighbour has just blocked the tunnel between your garden and their's then that surely doesn't stop the hedgehogs getting in to your garden.

HeddaGarbled · 02/10/2025 01:23

Indeed. The thinking behind valuing hedgehogs but disregarding all the other creatures that pet cats slaughter is baffling.

Ruggerlass · 02/10/2025 08:17

Cat’s bury their poo so if her toddlers are stepping on poo it’s more likely to be hedgehog poo which does look similar to cat poo. I’d explain this to her and reopen the hole. Her closing the hole is not going to stop your cat which in any case has the legal right to roam. My cat thinks nothing of jumping climbing over 6’ high fences. He has a litter test but won’t use it.

The ones that used my mother's garden as a little tray for a couple of decades* certainly didn't! Vile smelly stuff. Thankfully the current batch ignore her garden completely.

*not the same cat obviously, but she had 20ish years of cats mess.

staceyslatericeskater · 02/10/2025 09:04

The cat goes by her back kitchen door and poo’s in the gravel on the side by the front door.

She has seen the cat do it as well and apparently would shoo it off.

Basically she just dosent want cats roaming in her garden.

The selfish attitude of cat owners never ceases to amaze me.

outdooryone · 02/10/2025 09:13

Do you actually have hedgehogs, or do you just have the holes?

Seems amazing that you keep a professional wildlife hunter as a pet yet want wildlife in your garden.

And the same pet is crapping in a neighbours garden and you are surprised / think they should not try to block your animal?

Wow.

urgh, no wonder she doesn’t want it in her garden, that’s particularly disgusting.
Offer to buy her a supersoaker to shoo your cat off with, I don’t suppose blocking the holes has stopped it getting in. A good soaking won’t hurt the cat but imo has some chance of deterring it.

If you can help her deal with the problem being caused by your cat, then after that you can discuss reinstating holes large enough for a hedgehog but too small for a cat.

Happytap · 02/10/2025 09:17

This has to be a joke. How entitled can you be.

SpudsAndCarrots · 02/10/2025 09:17

Go speak to her. Say she can spray the cat with a water pistol if it goes in her garden to deter it, but point out it'll jump over the fence even with the holes blocked so makes sense to leave the holes for the hedgehogs

It never fails to surprise me how selfish and entitled some cat owners are.
she's within her rights to not want your cat shitting in her garden whether it's on gravel or elsewhere.

not everyone wants cat shit around them. It's your cat and no one else's.

im allergic to cats and i shoo them away if they come into mine but it doesn't always work, so i keep a small water gun on the table when im outside (in the summer) and spray the water at them, as I am severely allergic to cats and would like to make use of the quiet enjoyment of my garden thanks.

It's a wind up or reverse, I agree. Too obvious.

nebulacoccinella · 02/10/2025 09:26

I feel like the common denominator in disputes like this is lack of communication. Did your neighbour know they’re hedgehog holes? Did you two speak about the cat poo issue before they took this step? However it is totally fair for them to not want to have someone else’s pet or it’s poo on their property, especially considering their child’s safety.

laughingnow · 02/10/2025 09:28

More nonsense
