To have told my nearly five year old to be quiet when watching a film?

This evening I put Room on the Broom on for my children. DS is just talking incessantly all the way through it and after a couple of polite requests I told him that it was rude and if he didn’t want to watch it I’d turn it off.

I feel like it was a bit harsh but I desperately needed him to stop talking for a while.

I remember when my dd was a similar age, I challenged her to a competition of not talking.

Love it! It’s no different to teachers getting the class to play sleeping lions 😂

Bearbookagainandagain · 01/10/2025 19:14

Yeah, got 2 if those... By 7pm my head is about to explode!

I rarely ask them to stop talking, unless I need to focus on something important and they are distracting me (ask them to tell me later).

I do ask them - very very often - to be quiet(er).

Oh I would have to.turn round and tut!

I did! Repeatedly! Frankly between that and lots of patrons around us eating crisps, popcorn, and unwrapping sweets etc, I have decided not to go to any more West End shows for a while. I would genuinely pay extra to go to a non-eating performance for the quiet…

Poor kid

Get a grip.

She wanted him to shut up that's all.

She didn't want to starve him or beat him.

Children need to learn that the world doesn't revolve around them and that yes sometimes they do need to shut the fuck up.

Surroundedbyfools · 01/10/2025 19:30

I wouldn’t even think twice about this. My almost 4 year old will talk excessively sometimes to the point he can’t even make sense and I can literally see him trying to think of what to say next. If we were watching a film I would say he has to be quiet or I’ll put it off !

Sounds like OP only put the film on to shut him up though

Which is why I feel sorry for him

I agree and then she gets on her phone. So she's not oaying him or the siblings any attention. If he's 5 he's probably been at school, home now wants to chat to him mum and she would prefer to pick up a phone and come to mumsnet. Poor kid .

Yeah, poor kid, he has access to education, a home, a TV and a loving mum who just wanted a break.

My heart bleeds.

She could have spent the time it took her to post on here to chat to him and give him the attention he was obviously craving.

Poor kid

@BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind

do you never shush your children? What if you took them to a funeral for example?

@YourTaupeWriter

Mums are entitled to a bit of peace and quiet at times you know. They are human too.

Was he talking about the film?
Was he disturbing the others?

Or was it just that you wanted your excited 5 year old to shut the fuck up even though he was excited about what he was telling you and you wanted to invalidate his excitement because it was a bit inconvenient for you?

Mate, 5 year olds talk allllllllllllllllllll the time, incessantly, non stop, all day! I'm sure the OP, like most parents, has actively listened to and matched their child enthusiasm for hours and hours every day. And sometimes, just sometimes, you just need 30 sec of silence with your own thoughts. Don't play holier than thou.

teawamutu · 01/10/2025 20:09

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 01/10/2025 18:21

Talking through films isn't OK

But neither is shitting on someone else's excitement because they're talking too much for you

But neither is raising a kid not to know when to STFU in cinemas, theatres etc etc etc. Got to start somewhere, and 'sometimes you can think thoughts but keep them behind your teeth' is the kind of lesson that good parents attend to.

Also completely fine to want a child to be quiet for 5 minutes.

Getting all judgypants on them for it, however, is a dick move. HTH.

I would say that a school-age child like this one really needs to know that incessant talking isn’t always appropriate, and that nobody can have all the attention all the time because sometimes people will need a bit of peace. Also he’s old enough to know now that watching a film is something to do quietly.

Kids don't need to be given attention every time they want it.

In fact, it does them good to learn to pack it in and give mum a break sometimes.

LOL. No need to be so colossally dramatic. Unless you also desperately crave attention.

Notmyreality · 01/10/2025 20:28

So you, a parent, told your child to shut up.
OK. And?

I feel for sorry for anyone who has to spend time with kids whose parents haven’t taught them that sometimes, just sometimes, they need to calm down and be quiet and/or listen to someone/something that isn’t their own voice. Because those kids are not nice to be around, either for adults or other children.
