Allergies only at home – anyone else experience this?

i used to think my allergies were just random, but turns out they only hit me at home. leave town for a couple of days, all good. step back in, and bam congestion, itchy eyes, the works.

maybe dust, maybe a bit of mould hiding somewhere. after changing a few routines and adding some extra protection to bedding and the air, mornings feel a lot easier now.

anyone else had the same experience? would love to know what actually works.

Could be distmites. The doctors were able to diagnose mine with a blood test. Lots of hoovering, saline nasal rinse and lambswool beddings works for me.

My husband is suffering from similar atm but it’s not all the time and it feels random we have me idea what’s causing it!

ah that makes sense! i’ve been trying a few extra layers on bedding and cleaner air too, and it honestly makes mornings feel way lighter. curious if anyone’s noticed the same with small tweaks stacking up?

Ooh interesting, DH suffers the exact same thing! Nothing to offer unfortunately but interested to know it is a ‘thing’!

GreenBag53 · 01/10/2025 08:01

How do you get cleaner air?

LucyC1992 · 01/10/2025 08:01

mine felt random too until i noticed patterns. changing a few little things at home made mornings feel way lighter

Dust mite allergy here and what helped most has been a HEPA filter in our bedroom. Tried all the anti- allergy bedding etc first and while they helped a bit, the HEPA filter has totally cleared up all my symptoms.

adding a decent air purifier at home made a surprisingly big difference for me

yes, same here! tried all the bedding stuff first and it helped a bit, but adding a good HEPA-style air purifier really made mornings feel so much easier.

I thought I had hayfever but then I realised it never went away so thought maybe I had a dust allergy. Dr did a blood test and it turned out I was just allergic to all the types of pollen so starting with trees in February and going all the way through to end of weed season in maybe October). I also have a particularly high level of allergic reaction (off the chart to grass and weed apparently). Only thing that really works for me is prescription steroids but having an air purifier has made a bit of a difference too.

wow that’s intense! i’ve noticed the same meds help, but having a decent air purifier at home really eases things more than i expected

This is me - dust, son's pet birds. Im sat here suffering for the last few days ignoring my red flashing air purifiers, thanks for the reminder to replace filters!

I use zip mattress protectors and pill protectors, and coverless duvets, they all get washed weekly :)

Yes, a lot of people notice symptoms only at home, and it’s often linked to common indoor triggers like dust, dust mites, or sometimes excess humidity leading to mould growth.

What usually helps is identifying what feels most likely in your space. Some people find an air purifier helpful for general airborne particles, while a dehumidifier can make a difference if the air feels damp or musty.

It can also be useful to keep bedding and soft furnishings as consistent and well-maintained as possible, since those are common places where triggers build up!

Yes, this is quite common and often linked to indoor triggers like dust mites, mould, or pet dander since symptoms improve when you’re away.
Simple steps like washing bedding hot, improving ventilation, and checking for damp or mould can help. If it continues, allergy testing may help identify the exact cause.
