Help me I’m going bald

DoubleShotEspressox · 01/10/2025 06:23

Sorry the title is so dramatic but it’s actually true.

You can vote AIBU for posting for traffic.

I’ve been taking Mounjaro for six months and lost almost three stone. It has been quick but I’ve tried to prioritise protein with every meal and taking a multivitamin every day.

Literally overnight five weeks ago my hair just started shedding in clumps. And it’s showing no sign of stopping.

I was estimate from feeling the thickness I’ve lost around a third of my hair volume so far and it’s still coming out rapidly every day. It looks thin around the hairline, I can see through my parting into the scalp and I can feel that there’s almost no hair left behind my ears.

I’ve started taking collagen and pumpkin seed oil and adding a protein shake for an additional 20g of protein each day but I am stressing. My scalp is actually tingling and I’ve convinced myself it’s the hair roots dying off.

I need your help - anyone with experience of this, when does it end??? From what I read I can’t stop it???

Ive just started a new job and very soon I’m going to be this suddenly bald girl in the corner if it carries on.

I looked at buying minoxidil but some of the side effects look quite dangerous? And still not guaranteed to work.

I was finally feeling good about myself and now this happened and honestly I am devastated. I’m finding it quite distressing because I can’t even turn over in bed without 20 strands coming off my head.

I’m avoiding heat and overwashing, just loosely twisting it up into a claw grip to try and cover the patches.

Please can you share your experience if this has happened to you. Is there a magical elixir or anything else I should be doing/taking to help. Any magic shampoos, supplements, any reassurance that it eventually stops.

Go see your GP.

verycloakanddaggers · 01/10/2025 06:26

Is it a known side effect of Mounjaro?

I think I'd see the GP to clarify the likely cause.

Agix · 01/10/2025 06:26

Shooting up mounjaro is basically simulated anorexia. How dangerous it is for your body to severely undereat like that and drop lots of weight quickly doesn't become safer just because you're injecting yourself. The only reason it's encouraged whilst anorexia is treated is because the injections make £££.

I have anorexia. Your hair is going to fall out no matter what supplements you take, because youre are not consuming enough calories. Supplements, products etc won't do shit.

Welcome to the balding club. Glamorous, right? At least we skinny.

ComfortFoodCafe · 01/10/2025 06:27

Hair loss is a side effect of Mounjaro. Stop mounjaro!

NutellaEllaElla · 01/10/2025 06:29
  1. See your GP
  2. make sure you’re eating enough food. Severe restriction does result in hair loss. Doesn’t mean you can’t lose weight, but you must do it at a sensible pace.
PersephoneParlormaid · 01/10/2025 06:31

Is the skin shiny where you’ve lost it, and the hair follicles look a bit scabby? If so it could be frontal fibrosing alopecia. I have it and my hair tingles/itches.

3luckystars · 01/10/2025 06:33

Glowwa is absolutely excellent for hair loss.

It really works.

I think, about 6 months after any shock to your body, your hair comes out.
Roughly, 6 months after having a baby it’s similar. (Although that’s just losing the hair you didn’t lose during the pregnancy so it’s slightly different but still shocking when it happens) I remember reading about it previously. The time would add up as that’s when you started taking it. I would definitely speak to your GP and take Glowwa if you can afford it but any solution is going to take time.

Good luck x

Angryfrommanchester1 · 01/10/2025 06:34

Your calorie restriction has been too much. For all your bodily functions to continue you need to eat an adequate of nutrition and mounjaro allows you to ignore normal hunger cues.
I think there’s so much focus on these working people. Are happy to overlook or minimise side effects.
See your GP and stop the jabs.

If any hair growth stimulants really and truly worked, men all over the world would be slapping them on every day 👍

DoubleShotEspressox · 01/10/2025 06:57

@PersephoneParlormaidI wouldn’t say shiny as such, and definitely no scabs (yet). But the tingling sensation is very odd and I wondered if it was psychological but I don’t think so.

How/can you manage your condition?

I had this a few years ago after Covid. Apparently it’s a sudden change to the body causing the follicles to stop growing hair for a while.

Mine did stop after about 6 months but it took the hair years to grow back!

DoubleShotEspressox · 01/10/2025 06:58

@verycloakanddaggersI think it is now listed as a side effect.

So upset about this and yet at no point have you said to stop taking monjarno. I guess you need to consider what’s more important skinny or hair. I’d say hair,
get off the tablets and maintain a healthy calorie deficit.

Edwardbear1 · 01/10/2025 06:58

I’d go get your vit d, b12 and thyroid checked to make sure they are all ok. The good news is it will grow back when the weight loss slows down. Mine is growing back now.

Hairburst is quite good.

DoubleShotEspressox · 01/10/2025 06:59

@ComfortFoodCafeIs or a side effect of the weight loss or the drug itself?

I am tapering off and now on the lowest dose.

Exactly! I always say that, if these things worked there would be no bald men!

I am tapering off and now on the lowest dose.

It's a side effect of rapid weightloss and not consuming sufficent calories, protein or nutrients to keep your hair growing.

Likely to continue for about 6 months. Takes about a year to grow back. There is no quick fix.

It’s the rapid weightloss, nutrient deficiency and lack of proteins and vitamins.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 01/10/2025 07:07

Tp the gp for blood tests if its the MJ its not the mj its a deficiiency.

Has anything stressful happened????

I have lost about 50% of my hair im on mJ but its the stress thats done it for me.

LeopardPrince · 01/10/2025 07:11

I had patchy alopecia a decade ago. No cause found. It was horrid and affected my self-esteem. Some steroid injections in my scalp sorted it.

In your case the ‘good’ thing is that you know the cause. You need to pause the weight loss, however ‘addictive that has become. Isn’t there a Mounjaro board here? You might get help there from people who have been through this. Good luck.

GarlicPound · 01/10/2025 07:14

Edwardbear1 · 01/10/2025 07:05

It’s the rapid weightloss, nutrient deficiency and lack of proteins and vitamins.

Half a stone a month is fast weight loss, but not pathological. I agree you should see your GP in case you're missing essential nutrients - the definition of malnutrition.

However, I'm also thinking it could be a shock response to the changes in both lifestyle and body. Find out whether you've developed an infection or something unrelated to your diet, and whether you're missing anything out from your intake.

It does take ages to grow back. On the plus side, a very high hairline is fashionable again - or you could cut it short and go for a ruffled look.

AramintaWildbloode · 01/10/2025 07:17

It is a fairly frequent effect of major weight-loss which causes temporary hormonal imbalance.
I have the same thing when I have lost large amounts of weight three times over the decades.
Not mounjaro related.
Hair loss stopped when my weight had stabilised.

londongirl12 · 01/10/2025 07:19

It’s a side effect of the drug, so stop the drug and see what happens! Is it really worth the hair loss?

DoubleShotEspressox · 01/10/2025 07:19

@9ToGoalHoly shit - if I continue to shed at this rate for 6 months - then I genuinely won’t have any hair left. I’m willing for it to take time - I know hair growth is a painfully slow process - but please tell me that there’s hope this will slow the fuck down at least??

Any rapid weight loss will cause hair loss. It’s normal and will come back ❤️
