I went to dentist this morning after having an abscess develop over holiday weekend. Got emergency appointment and after looking at options he extracted too back molar. After doing this he basically rammed a wad in my mouth and said that was me. Nearly three hours later it is still bleeding, despite me changing gauze and biting down - is this normal

Call the dentist and ask.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/09/2025 13:09

No - it's not normal. Ring your dentist.

Alittlewordinyourear · 30/09/2025 13:17

It has now stopped heavy bleeding and is now pinky tinged saliva! I feel in shock ! I’ve never had an extraction befire and didn’t expect it! At the moment I feel like I will never eat or drink again! Any advice would be gratefully received. Husband is rubbish- just offered me a bowl of spicy soup and crusty bread

I'm glad it's stopped. It is shocking. They yank it out, shove in the wad, kick you out and leave you bleeding fairly heavily for hours!

But it's all over now. No more painful rotten tooth. It's for the best. If it's right in the back you might not need anything to replace it.

No to spicy soup though. It might sting or irritate it. Something soft and bland is better. Yoghurt or ice-cream?

Thaimonstera · 30/09/2025 13:20

Yes it can be normal. But if you’re concerned call your dentist.

do not eat or drink anything too hot or cold, and do not use a straw. Also do not do excessive lifting/carrying/exercise. I did after a molar extraction and gave myself dry socket which is the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced.

BeQuirkyTealMentor · 30/09/2025 13:29

Had similar done recently and it did bleed for most of the first day and on and off for several days after.

GentleSheep · 30/09/2025 13:33

Honestly that sounds pretty normal! When you feel up to eating stick to liquid things like soup. Don't use a straw whatever you do, you don't want to disturb the clot that forms in the socket. Hope you feel better soon!

MorrisZapp · 30/09/2025 13:33

I love an extraction. No existent teeth can cause me no pain.

Eat soft food until it heals up a bit, you'll be amazed how quickly the gum just grows over the abyss.

Brenda34 · 30/09/2025 13:36

Don't rinse with warm water either. Cool water 1 tsp of salt per half pint. Hold water in your mouth rather than slosh it around. Everything needs gentleness to avoid disturbing the clots.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 30/09/2025 13:47

I've recently had an extraction. No v hot/cold food for 24 hrs. No smoking/drinking alcohol. Don't use a straw.
No salt water rinses until 24 hrs.

Don't run tongue or poke area. A clot needs to form if you disturb it you run risk of dry socket. Which is painful in the extreme!!

I feel your pain it's a horrid thing to go through. In a few days you'll be back to normal though. Take care!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 30/09/2025 13:48

Oh yes soft food only for 24hrs, nothing spiky like crusty bread that can disturb the clot.

MonGrainDeSel · 30/09/2025 14:32

Yes, rinsing with salt water is really good. VERY gently.

JoWawa · 30/09/2025 14:55

Recently I had all my molars extracted (in two sessions) prior to cancer treatment. I was given pain relief before they started but that's basically it.

A few days later my mouth was fairly OK but I do miss my teeth.

Jess13224 · 30/09/2025 15:18

I'm a dental nurse. Continued bleeding is not normal however blood in saliva is. Avoid hot baths/showers for 24hrs as tyis can cause clot to dislodge. pain in and around the sight and jaw is normal for a couple days but should be improving by day 3. If pain gets worse day 4 or after then it can be a sign of infection. Different dentists recommended Different things for after care regarding salt water washes, I would follow what they have said however from my experience doing it too often or more than recommended can make healing processes longer from repeatedly dislodging clot. Have a relaxed rest of your day no exercise and if your in alot of pain just avoid brushing that region of the mouth for tonight.

Avoid any noticotine, too hot or cold food/drinks and just leave the area alone with tongue.

@Alittlewordinyourear I had a big tooth out this morning.

Dentist put some gauze plug in the gap after and made me sit for a while, checked it and said to stay in the chair abit longer.

He checked again and said yes it was clotting, but to sit in reception for abit longer. Dentist then asked me to come back into the surgery to check again, he was happy and then got DH to pick me up. Sent me with an info sheet and some gauze things. Even made me chew a sugar tablet as I hadn't had any breakfast, before I left.

Im sat with a toilet roll next to me, I'm dribbling into the tissue. Sometimes it's pinky and other times red fresh blood.

Im taking paracetamol and Ibuprofen together as pain once it was out was awful.

I have no urge to eat anything, might just leave it until tomorrow.

I didn't have a tooth out today, but I did.have part of a root canal done. Only part as basically - I am a whimp when it comes to dentists, but also as he could only find 1 root, 2nd is very narrow he said and couldn't even see the third one on th3 xray. So back again in November for part 2!

@Tinysarah1985 I was offered root canal but dentist said would be 2-3 visits, no chance it will work, would need to go to a specialist for more % of success plus would need capping after.

I just couldn't face all the visits and discomfort of it all for strong chance it wouldn't work.

Alternative dentist said to take out, as It's a top back tooth, teeth either side so fine for chewing.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/09/2025 19:50

I had the roots of 2 baby teeth removed 3 weeks ago, in hospital because of additional risk factors but just a half hour appointment with local anaesthetic. Both cavities were packed with haemostatic dressings (I bled a lot during surgery) and stitched. I then sat biting down on gauze pads until the bleeding stopped, and I was sent home with full instructions on after care, fresh gauze pads in case of fresh bleeding, and instructions to call the unit if I had any more bleeding that did not stop.

I had no further bleeding. I was careful to follow all the after care instructions and had no problems with pain apart from some soreness the following day. My stitches dissolved and came out after 2 weeks and the gaps are now completely healed. I have a follow up appointment on Friday to check all is well.

Quite frankly I think the OP did not receive very good care (and I think I received excellent care).
