To ask for help with gift ideas for new dad

Hi! I’m incredibly excited this evening as my little brother has finally become a dad today after many years of wanting a family (and I’m an auntie!)

I’ve got some lovely gifts for mum and baby already, and a food delivery gift card for them all but I’ve been really stuck for something for my brother and I’ve been looking for months. I know the baby is the most special present he could ever have but I’d still like him to have a gift too when I visit with gifts for everyone else but everything I find just seems to be so generic or just plain beer 😣

That's so lovely OP it's not something that's really thought of is it. I suck at gift giving so can't really advise as most things I'd think of would be for both and not really just for him.

A sling? It's what I've always given new parents, mums or dads. The caboo is pretty comfy for a newborn.

Giving it to dad reinforces that men can (and should) sling too, as some need a bit of a nudge!

A good baby carrier.

You could do practical:

a good keepy cup for tea/coffee so he can drink it safely with a baby in his arms/it stays warm.

An audible subscription so he's got something to listen to on pram walks/whilst walking up and down shushing a baby

Hand cream (lots of nappy changing and hand washing are in his future).

Some nice snacks and treats - I think all new parents appreciate this.

Some of those mittens that stick to the buggy handle for the winter walks.

They are all quite generic though...could you get him a selection of the books he/you loved as a child for him to read to his child.

I love the thinking behind your post and in a lot of cases the nudge is probably well needed. In this case they already have a sling and one of the backpack baby carrier things (he bought them)

When I say he’s always wanted a family I mean it, he was overjoyed when they learned they were expecting. He has waited on his wife hand and foot throughout the pregnancy (rightly so!) he’s read every scrap of baby prep and parenting info he can find, has bought everything he can think of, decorated the baby’s room (even though they want baby in with them until at least 12 months old) has been running her baths, cooking her meals, has panicked at every hiccup along the way…

Mum has lots of treat and pamper type gifts (well deserved!) and I just want to give him something along the same lines but nothing quite seems to fit the bill.

Ah the kept up cup is a great idea! They could both use one of those I could get two :)

Hes not really a book guy but loves music so maybe a Spotify sub, music is good for babies too!

Hand creams also a good idea, and the mittens, will get some for him and mum aswell.

I love the suggestion about the beloved books! He’s a lot younger than me so remember reading certain books to him as a toddler and child, that’s a really lovely idea thank you!

Have they got a garden? A rose bush or other plant esp if you can find one connected with the baby’s name. Or there are loads of roses with ‘baby’ in their name.

Omg they have and there is! I’m a gardener too so could plant it for them! I googled and theres one with the baby’s actual name, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it!

Baby was named when they learned the sex, it’s a theme in SILs family so they could totally build upon it too if they wanted to in future! This is genius thank you! 🥰

I went down a whole rabbit hole and there are also roses with brother and sils names too… I still need a gift that’s just for my brother but I’m going to get one each of these roses too, thank you so much for this what a beautiful idea ♥️♥️♥️

This is such a heartwarming thread with some lovely ideas. I really like the book and rose ones.

Useful things like buggy clips and cup holders for the pram.
Rucksack as baby bag.
Trousers with lots of pockets (boring but useful)
Personalised cufflinks if he wears them
Personalised story book
mug warmer
I got my husband a personalised football as one of his early Father’s Day presents (I just put “for our first kickabout” rather than the name).

PrincessFairyWren · 30/09/2025 01:49

Beautiful books for him to read to the baby. Especially board books.

Also a parenting book. I loved mine. I know there is the internet now but I really appreciated looking up stuff like hiccups or snot or minor things for reassurance.

I bought my hubby the Haynes Manual to Babies which went down well. Otherwise a nice bag to use as a nappy/changing bag.
