Do self help books actually help?

Our daughter has been going through a self development phase for about the last 10 years.

She spends all her time reading self help books and I’m starting to think she’s addicted to the ‘promise’ that the next book will suddenly change her life.

I’m starting to wonder if all these self help books are actually good for her.
She seems to go from one book to the next without making any changes.

Well they can only help is you want them too and you take their advice. Just reading them isn't going to do anything.

Well, if she keeps reading them and doesn’t change anything, there’s your answer, surely?

They really help the shysters that write and publish them...

They can help some, they can do nothing long lasting for lots of people.

Depends on the issue.

If someone was stuck then targeted support would probably be better.

I was going to say this..

She’s doing really well in life but I think she’s looking for something that doesn’t exist.

I've been helped by a couple. I don't have the spoons to think too much, I need someone to say do ABC without all the fluff.

I suppose it also depends on what the topic is, and what you classify as self help?
