To think it's an outrage employer isn't financially responsible?

Working for start up.
There are a million issues with dirty politics, toxicity etc.
My big problem is they started paying staff via revolut and are not paying HMRC, NI or student loan contributions. Instead they're just paying the net pay amount via revolut and the rest of the money is going missing.
They've stopped paying contractors too. They're ghosting them.

We just got a 50k investment and loads of people who were meant to be paid have not been. CEO insists they have been.

I have just found out CEO told other founders my ex-colleague and friend phoned him asking for equity instead of expenses money they're owed. This never happened according to my friend.

I have my resignation letter sent. I am going to escalate to HMRC etc but everyone seems very casual about this when it seems quite serious. AIBU?

Update - apparently employer issued p45 for me in April without informing me so I am now liable for tax on net earnings

So your ‘net earnings’ were actually your Gross pay, and they have been underpaying you?

Comefromaway · 06/10/2025 18:05

They can’t do that. They would have to officially make you redundant and you’d get a payout depending on length of service. Plus it wouldn’t be a legitimate redundancy as the job still exists.

id be taking them for unfair dismissal & unauthorised deduction of wages.

Op who else have they done that too?
I think it might be worth getting proper legal advice.

Edit Sorry quoted the wrong person.

Hi op this how I found out my employer was not paying my tax or n.i I would ask the employer for your payslips for the entire time you haven’t had any and ask for your p60 if you never got it. Put everything in writing hi x can you send me copies of my payslips from x date not had anything since this date and a copy of p60 I’m am applying for mortgage or rental and they need proof of my earnings when they reply with whatever they say send on to hmrc. Don’t let hmrc fob you off they need to know and stop them and you need to know your not going to get a hefty bill. Do you get the legal minimum wage 12.21 and do you get your statutory holiday entitlement? Please don’t give up.

Talk to HMRC immediately- just because you were "informed" doesn't necessarily make it legal. Like notices which say sale goods can't be returned- if they are faulty they can and to to have a policy which doesn't allow refunds is illegal-notice notwithstanding.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/10/2025 21:24

What industry are these absolute chancers in? You can’t effectively make people redundant , not tell them and have them carry on doing the work !

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2025 08:43

They can’t do that.

They just have.

I've just posted on another thread about the difference between "the law" and what actually goes on and people get away with in real life.

Just blow that whistle loud and long, and make sure you get your tax and NI contributions fully credited too!

Absolutely one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had of my life was working for a start-up company
They wanted to pay less because it’s all about the opportunity to get in on the ground floor, whereas actually like most of them failed, It now looks crap on my CV because they’ve cleared out all evidence they ever existed due to HMRC chasing their arses
I would’ve been better off being unemployed for two years

Good God! I’m so sorry this happened to you!

And who do you want anticipate will be paying this 🤣
You’d be putting yourself through all of the stress and trauma and taking up valuable time that should be directed towards rebuilding your life and your career because you’re not gonna get a penny out of these people
That’s how the game works. They get rich on other people’s free ideally labour. But cheap if they have to pay you something
