Roundabout debate-whos in the correct lane?

Moorethemerrier · 28/09/2025 19:12

Help me and my husband settle a debate

This roundabout has 3 lanes to enter:
left = left (1st exit) Middle-Straight (2nd exit). Right = right turn / all the way around

Both cars (Pink in front, Blue behind) enter correctly in the right-hand lane to take the 3rd exit (right).

As you go around, the road splits into 3 lanes before the exit:

left = exit now, miiddle = continue further.
Right = go round again

Blue car swings a wide left and ends up in the far-left lane, which they believe is now the proper lane for exiting as they don’t need to cross any lanes

Pink car follows the curve of the markings and quite naturally ends up in the middle lane — but then still tries to exit, which means crossing over Blue’s path.

The disagreement:

Pink says the far left split lane is only for cars entering from the left-hand side (see star in diagram).
Blue says that far left lane is the proper exit lane for anyone on the roundabout, and Pink shouldn’t cut across.

who’s right here, Pink or Blue?

From your diagram and description i would say blue is correct.

steamingin · 28/09/2025 19:18

If there's only one lane to exit then blue is correct. Pink's lane doesn't exit according to the diagram. Who crashed?

Twinkylightsg · 28/09/2025 19:20

Right lane is for 3rd or more exits. So blue isn't wrong.

Middle can be used for 2nd or 3rd.

Left can be used for 1st or 2nd.

Ddakji · 28/09/2025 19:22

So to get to that lane Blue crossed two lanes, yes? Blue should really have started in the middle lane, I think.

To be honest, as no-one going round a roundabout should be driving at speed I think there’s an argument for both being OK options. I would probably agree slightly more with Pink, I think, though obviously Pink shouldn’t have cut over Blue.

Missellie6 · 28/09/2025 19:24

Blue from your description and diagram if those are the road markings, but I would have thought middle lane was for that exit and 1st lane for first 2 exits

BrightLightTonight · 28/09/2025 19:26

Pink is totally wrong - crosses lane to the right and then crosses lane to the left

TrimayrAcademy · 28/09/2025 19:31

Blue is correct, there is a roundabout similar to this near us and it does cause issues because it doesn’t feel right to cross over the lane and exit but you have to or you end up like pink, not able to get off.

DinaofCloud9 · 28/09/2025 19:32

Yes I'd agree blue is correct.

TheNightingalesStarling · 28/09/2025 19:34

We would need a satellite picture of actual markings to be certain, but looks like blue.

MegaMinion34 · 28/09/2025 19:45

Blue is correct.

JumpingPumpkin · 28/09/2025 19:47

It seems like blue is correct, however if pink was in front when entering I’d be inclined to give them room to move out to exit from that middle lane as it does look awkward.

AgentLisbon · 28/09/2025 19:54

Based on your diagram, blue, but I agree a satellite image would be best as your diagram seems to be pushing towards blue as the answer. Can you get from google maps?

AgentLisbon · 28/09/2025 19:56

To add, even if blue was in the incorrect lane, pink would at best be contributory negligent if there was a crash if pink moved across into blue’s path.

Hedgerowbustle · 28/09/2025 20:33

Blue was correct. Pink is cutting blue up.

I think Pink would be fine if blue was not there, as long as Pink was indicating left when passing the exit before the one they're taking, those waiting there would need to give way to Pink, regardless of the lane they were in.

lljkk · 28/09/2025 20:35

Not quite but almost same as .... Norwich, NDR, junction with the B1150 approaching from east. <Shudder> because the NDR is a terrible road. Blue's line is the safest bet. If I were blue I'd be watching what is pink up to, though, and ready to let them exit where I was going too. The big danger is people hitting you from the left (the 3 lane junction on left side in OP's diagram). One of these cars may think they can slip out and then will impede pink's exit and not figure out blue's line so simply collide with blue. Did I mention that NDR is an awful road?

Hedgerowbustle · 28/09/2025 20:36

Yes, it's one where you'd hope there'd be at least two lanes on the exit!

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 28/09/2025 20:38

Team Blue

Topjoe19 · 28/09/2025 20:38

I would say blue correct.

Notmyreality · 28/09/2025 20:40

No offence but your diagram isnt accurate enough to make a proper decision. Screen shot it from google maps and
post it.

rwalker · 28/09/2025 20:48

We have exactly the same set up and it’s paint on the rd as blue is correct
I just follow the road markings but the road markings go against what I was told when learning to drive more than 1/2 way round u go in the inside lane

it does seem as though you are travelling too far round in the outside lane but it does work and marked up like that

CuppaWhiteTea · 28/09/2025 21:03

I hate roundabouts. I hope this is hypothetical and no one collided.

Motomum23 · 28/09/2025 22:01

Blue is correct and how on earth does pink end up cutting blue up when they entered the RH lane together with blue in front?? After you have passed the last exit before the one you intend to use you move to the left hand lane ready to exit so those going round the roundabout know what you intend to do. Pink tried to undercut and if there was an accident pink is entirely liable.

veggietate · 28/09/2025 22:14

I was taught that the right hand lane is only for the last exit. So I would have approached in be middle lane and filtered out accordingly.

spicetails · 28/09/2025 22:17

If you are entering in the far right lane you could either exit at the 3rd or fourth exit

TheNightingalesStarling · 28/09/2025 22:24

veggietate · 28/09/2025 22:14

I was taught that the right hand lane is only for the last exit. So I would have approached in be middle lane and filtered out accordingly.

Road markings supersede arbitrary rules like that.

Locally we have a roundabout where the markings are LH Lane for exits 1, 2 or 3, and RH lane for exit 3 (or going back on yourself).

On this roundabout it appears the middle lane is only for exit 2.
