That the Red Roses 'celebration' at Battersea power station just looks a bit crap

Just the above really.
Not that many people, in a non-central part of London, so difficult to get to.
Why don't they get an open top bus through London like the men?

OP posts:

Even men's rugby isn't nearly as big as men's football. I watched most of the England games in the World Cup and they were fantastic, but in general people were a lot more interested and enthusiastic about the Lionesses.

If it was a big deal there would be a big parade. It’s hardly the football World Cup is it. I wish these things would stop expecting the recognition of sporting events that the whole country get behind.

81,885 people attended the final yesterday. 5.8 million people watched on TV. You can pretend no one cares if it makes you happy, but it’s not true.

I wasn't going to go in any case as I live too far away and they were not the team I was supporting.

But I was really annoyed at the commentators for the game yesterday. Making comments about "oh she's strong because she was raised on a dairy farm!" Like as if she'd been bench pressing cows all her life I guess. Never heard someone talk like that about a guy's fitness for a sport.

And all the comments about how hard it must be for the "girls" being away from their families and their children. Topped by interviewing one of the husbands at the end - I turned off in disgust. I can't recall ever seeing a WAG being interviewed about how hard life is at home without their bloke.

Rant over. For now.

Edited

Dave Ward is the head coach at Bristol Bears where Abi plays. He had a long career at Quins playing no. 2 & 7. They both moved from Quins to take up their roles. Probably a more knowledgeable interviewee than most

It's pretty lame but honestly so was the tournament. I watched about 6 games and none were remotely competitive. England did great but such a shame they were all so one sided.

That’s what happens when near amateurs play professionals. England are the best funded team and have been for a long time. It’s no coincidence they won.
Having said that, I thought it was a fantastic tournament - the atmosphere in the stadia was brilliant and there was a lot of support for the “minor” teams.

Last week. Will be going twice next week.

I just think it's a pitiful amount of people vs all the thousands that have been supporting them over the last few weeks. We went to a game at Ashton Gate and it was great.

I would definitely go out to see them on my lunch break if they were on an open top bus

Well then you should know better. No one goes to trafalgar square unless they have to or they don’t know better

9inapack · 28/09/2025 17:22

A bus route through London would have been mortifying for these players. Most people would have wondered what the heck it was all about; others would try and hail it

There was 90,000 each night at Wembley for Oasis. Perhaps we should shut the roads in honour of their sell-out tour?

You said ‘no one cares’. I was addressing that. Are you going to acknowledge that at least 5.8 million people cared?

Catpiece · 28/09/2025 17:26

Yes I’ll acknowledge that it was a minority in comparison.

Where did you get 5.8 million from

I saw a rather embarrassing article excitedly reporting In total, 4.6 million viewers tuned in to the live coverage over the weekend. and the final pulled in 600000 in player and 2.3 mil on bbc

In comparison to what? Why are you comparing it to anything? It was an event its own right, which 5.8 million cared about. You seem very bitter about that.

blobby10 · 28/09/2025 17:28

I thought the balcony appearance was hilarious as most of them were clearly still drunk or incredibly hungover! I spoke to one of the players mums last week and she said they were all planning a huge party Saturday night whatever the result Grin. It all did seem a bit forced and unplanned but tbh I was so amazed at the BBC putting women's sport on terrestrial TV as well as the 'party' that it didn't matter! Had a look at the Daily Mail this morning and they didn't even mention it until you clicked through to the sports pages and then clicked onto Rugby!

OonaStubbs · 28/09/2025 17:28

Just because people watch on TV doesn't mean they care enough to turn up to see an open-top bus celebration through the streets of London.

As though trying to make so much of so little

Treeleaf11 · 28/09/2025 17:30

There was a running race in central London today which had road closures so they couldn't have a bus parade as well.

Catpiece · 28/09/2025 17:31

Not bitter just confused as to why every minor thing needs to be ‘celebrated’. As a previous poster said no one in London would have known what was going on. It’s very niche. It’s not football and you don’t seem to understand that. You liked it. Good for you but it doesn’t have the following you think it does which has been made clear by the lack of media coverage. You getting all angry won’t make people want to watch it. It’s not comparable.

OonaStubbs · 28/09/2025 17:31

I doubt the England womens cricket team would get much of a crowd for a bus celebration either. The Lionesses are by far the biggest deal as far as women's sports team go.

Why do you care so much? 😂. 5.8 million people watched it. That’s nowhere near ‘no one’. It’s quite a lot of people.

Exactly

I am happy whenever England wins anything
but it feels so… forced the idea that this even remotely featured on the radar for the vast vast overwhelming majority of England. A bus route through London would have been nothing short of humiliating for the players.

Trafalgar sq? Tumbleweed aside from family, friends and a few core fans

TheNightingalesStarling · 28/09/2025 17:34

Its quite amusing that some people care so little they want to prove no one cares.

But anyway... it is true I think any attendance would be poor, but thats because its short notice and also, a lot of the young female fans who were there yesterday were actually playing today in their own team matches. That would be true for mens sport as well... including football.

I’m not at all angry. Just confused about you saying ‘no one cares’ when at least 5.8 million people cared. Just because you don’t care, doesn’t mean no one does. Plenty of people in London would have known what was going on. I imagine some of them were even amongst the 5.8 million people who watched it on television, or the 81000 who went to Twickenham.
I’m more of a football fan than a rugby fan by the way. I manage an under 12 girls team. I don’t see that as any reason to belittle the achievements of the women’s rugby team, or to pretend that no one cares.
