Hi everyone. Hope all’s well.
over the past week, nearly two I’ve worked my way through all of our food.
please note this isn’t begging. I’ve had to pay for an emergency regarding my son that was unavoidable. I should add that he is now with his father so it’s just me in the house.
I have £1.27 electric which I know won’t go until 9am tomorrow.
I have googled Trussell trust and church feeds but none are over my end of the city.
I have even gone through the rice, the custard, just everything. Does anyone know of an emergency food service /bank that delivers or that I could walk to, that’s open on a Sunday ? I will take and accept anything I feel really quite ill now.
I get paid on the 3rd (Fri) so it’s just a tiny bit longer but I’ve been hungry for about 2 weeks now. I’m in south Wales
I know it’s my fault for not saving etc but I’ve been off my anti depressants the last two months and evidently, it was too soon as I’m not coping.
any advice gratefully received and thanks in advance to all xX

I did qmee surveys on my phone and it didn’t take long to earn £10 just in spare time. Maybe a week but if you sat and did it for a day you could earn a bit - then you could get some cheap bread/milk and pasta etc to eke out.

Since posting this I have done a few surveys and earned £6 which is now in my PayPal account. Obviously OP definitely needs all of the foodbanks and support advised but when things are this dire a few quid can also make a big difference so worth doing and if you’re struggling with mental health etc it’s not too taxing xx

If you can get to Chapter, there's a community pantry just inside the main entrance.

I’m really glad you’ve got sorted OP.

Slightly off topic, but the number of people suggesting the Sikh temple shows how brilliant multi culturalism is for our countries.

Yes.🙂 Well observed.

You lot are flipping amazing xx I’m all sorted and honestly, endless gratitude for your support and ideas and everything xx we’re not all scammers some of us are genuinely in need of help. You’ve literally saved me and thank you xx

Very pleased for you, OP. What help did you find?

Haveaproperty · 28/09/2025 16:36

Can you sell any gold? I sold two odd earings the other day and got a few quid.
How able bodied are you? I think if I was on your position I would walk out my house and knock on doors and see if anyone needed a driveway sweeping maybe for a fiver.
Also online surveys but you wont get rhe cash straight away. I make at least 50 quid a month doing them.
The food apps are good. I think its called olio.

sleeppleasesoon · 28/09/2025 17:15

Dusty Forge in Ely offer a free hot meal on Monday evenings.

LakieLady · 28/09/2025 17:20

This thread shows Mumsnet at its best: really helpful suggestions and no unpleasantness. 😊

Really hope you get things sorted OP.

SmudgeButt · 28/09/2025 17:35

googling community fridge in Cardiff gave me this result. No idea how close it would be to you but they open at 10 am tomorrow.

Just saying you're in S Wales isn’t going to help if you need suggestions for something very close to you…

I knew she was in Cardiff. Cardiff people often see south Wales as just the Cardiff area :)

Did posters send you money @JenNtonic

Of course they did
Hungry for the past two weeks, yet posted on a sunday and all sorted within an hour
only a pound for electricity
no friends or family
mentioned she had paypal
a young child
she needs somewhere within walking distance
the self deprecating tone of the messages

….she knew which buttons to press but who knows maybe she’ll come back and tell us exactly how she sorted herself.

God that sounds scammy when you say that

September is the start of begging season on here so everyone should be cautious.

God what have we become really?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 28/09/2025 20:01

Plenty of places in Cardiff hat would help
Quicker to get some gullible sorts to fire up the PayPal

Absolutely. It would be great if after MN post the "never give more than you can afford" message, that could trigger blocking of DMs to the poster for 72 hours or something. That would mean people could still share useful information about community fridges or food banks, but would deter the people who are clearly hoping that a well-meaning poster will slip them £20 to their Paypal account.

It sad, but unfortunately posters have been scammed on here before. I was just suggesting people are careful. There are some very kind, often vulnerable people on here that can be taken advantage of.

In her first post there was a clue. She stated she wasn't begging. People who aren't hoping for money would never think of saying that.

padronpepper · 29/09/2025 13:41

@Idontpostmuch
They always say they aren’t begging.
And are always mortified when MN post their usual warning. And always have a reason they can’t ask family or friends for help and support.

Yep. And 20 minutes between asking for help and all being sorted. Despite not being able to drive....?

I rather hoped @JenNtonic would return to tell us how she was sorted.

Hopefully some of the information people took the trouble to provide will be helpful to others.

MargaretThursday · 29/09/2025 17:24

I expect she'll be back.

Under a name change and this time she'll have 57p on the electric meter and be out of nappies and formula for the twins...

I'd agree on stopping pms for at least 72 hours, possibly a week for anyone who is posting similar. I'm sure if someone has something private that they feel is important to pass on then MNHQ would be happy to do that.
