Baby has a "dent" in ribs?

Katty955 · 27/09/2025 18:01

So since my baby was born he's had this "dent" as such?
No health professional has ever mentioned it until the other day so I have booked a doctors appointment.
I've never thought anything to it because no one else has and he's never been in any form of discomfort, he's a happy thriving boy etc...
Has anyone else's DC had this?

There's a condition called pectoris excavatum (or similar) but I've never seen it in one small area like this. Doctor should be able to work it out.

Yeah I've seen that when I've looked online but that seems to be in the middle of the chest :/ x

Is it only there when he breathes in, or all the time?

Katty955 · 28/09/2025 20:50

It's all the time, it does go in more when he breathes in obvs but it is always there, it seems to be more noticable as he's grown and put weight on x

Would also like to add his body is slightly curved in this picture also, he does favour that side when being held so didn't know if it was due to a spinal curve maybe 🤷🏼‍♀️

How does his spine look @Katty955? Does it appear to be straight, or can you see an obvious curve? Make sure you get the GP to have a look at his appointment. If you don't have any luck with the GP, you could try a baby chiropractor (not sure they're actually "chiropractors" for babies, more checking alignments etc., rather than big, clicking resets!) maybe?

I am a paed nurse and have been following since you first posted but had no advice, other than see your GP. I am curious as to how you went with your doctor. Was there cause for concern or is it nothing to worry about?

I'm a retired midwife and I'm also interested in the outcome @Katty955

Hope your little boy is okay.

I've been to the doctors he checked it out and I shown images that show he's always had it, he had a look at spine, ribs etc and was very confused also, he's got in touch with paeds to see if they want to see him, just waiting for a response of them now 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was hoping that it would be OK but it is good you have raised it and are getting it further investigated. Best of luck, OP. Thinking of you both.

Katty955 · 23/10/2025 11:09

Update:
The paeds have been in touch and said there's no reason for concern after seeing videos/pictures and speaking with the doctor who saw my little boy.
They said he has no other abnormalities, difficulties etc and it will be more a cosmetic issue but they don't believe he needs to be seen further regarding the issue 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is good news 😊

Laffydaffy · 23/10/2025 11:24

Did they say what the cause could be?

Katty955 · 24/10/2025 12:07

They didn't say, I did ask the lady that phoned me but she just said she's reading notes that have been sent and if all the questions they asked (does he webbed feet, hands, breathing difficulties etc) had an answer of no then they wasn't concerned 🤷🏼‍♀️
Not sure if I should just accept they have no concerns or maybe ask for more details🤔
