To think that tea tastes terrible from a travel mug?

Every time I make a cup of tea in a travel mug, it tastes really horrible and completely different from when I make it in a normal mug. Is it just me? I have tried three different types of travel cup by the way. I’d love to take a cup of tea out on the school run etc but it just not enjoyable.

Ditto those water reservoirs with a tube for walking / running with. Revolting.

All just taste of plastic.

Stopandlook · 27/09/2025 14:13

Yes! You need to get a porcelain travel mug, it’s the only answer

Brightbluesomething · 27/09/2025 14:49

Yes I agree. Don’t like tea from a travel mug. But it strangely tastes good from a flask so I don’t know what that’s about.

Xenomoth · 27/09/2025 14:49

Totally agree, it’s vile, I’m going to take the above suggestion for a porcelain mug

statetrooperstacey · 27/09/2025 14:49

Omfg yes! Currently on my 3rd different mug, think I’m going to give up. All taste like stewed farts .

notanothernamechangemother · 27/09/2025 14:52

I agree. I found making the tea in a regular mug first makes it slightly more bearable when transferred into a travel mug.

FuzzyWolf · 27/09/2025 14:53

Find one that makes plain water taste normal and your tea will be fine. I think too many travel mugs carry coffee which is stronger tasting and overrides the awfulness.

gottalottodo · 27/09/2025 14:54

Yep. Agreed. Tea tastes amazing in a polystyrene cup though… bring them back!

FridayIsItFridayYet · 27/09/2025 14:54

It tastes better than no tea.

Tea from a normal mug tastes better than from a glass mug (glares at DH who is trying to replace all my Denby with crappy glass mugs)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 27/09/2025 15:57

Totally agree. I also think water boiled in some plastic kettles also tastes odd. I use a stove top stainless steel.one now.

Sia9 · 27/09/2025 16:07

It’s better if you make it in a normal cup and then transfer over as a pp said.

Never use a metal travel mug for tea (fine for coffee).
Once a travel mug has had coffee in it, it is unusable for tea.
Plastic can be hit and miss.
Ceramic and bamboo are the only options for tea, but I have yet to find a truly leak-proof one you can actually chuck in a bag.

Sometimes, I use a large metal travel mug for boiling water and take a bamboo travel mug to make the tea in. But I haven't found the perfect solution for milk yet.

AbzMoz · 27/09/2025 16:27

Yes it’s undrinkable. Similarly can’t stand the taste of thermos tea (and i am an avid tea drinker).

MoominMai · 27/09/2025 16:54

YANBU absolutely! It tastes like tea sweat - is the only way I can describe. Still tea but with a pungent unwanted accompanying taste also!
