To think Labour want to lose the election

Youth unemployment is much worse in the EU and opening this visa route isn't going to do anything to alleviate the youth unemployment that we have. We'd see a trickle of people leave here because young people don't have the language skills, plus there are fewer jobs in Europe relative to here.

A woman with shoulder-length brown hair and a fringe speaks into a microphone, with a gold clock featuring prominently behind her. She wears a black cardigan and a gold necklace, with small silver hoop earrings.

Reeves pushes for EU youth migration scheme ahead of Budget - BBC News

The chancellor calls for an 'ambitious' deal as she looks to boost growth ahead of the 26 November Budget.

Reeves just wants to fuck this country up as much as humanly possible. Our own young people are struggling for jobs how the hell would this help. She needs sacking! Shes done more damage than Liz Truss!

No, she doesn't.

People like this shouldn't be allowed to vote

The Welsh Labour run Senedd is deeply unpopular now here in Wales and rightly so. They are predicted to be ousted next May in the Senedd elections. Plaid and Reform are neck and neck at the moment.

That is true, but because of our new voting system it is very unlikely any party will ever now achieve a majority in Wales. So it is fairly likely Labour will end up in a coalition with PC.

That 4 years went so quickly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we go into the next general election in 4 years time with a different leader for both Labour and the Conservatives.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Conservatives look dead in the water though and they have a massive hill to climb in the next few years if they want to be seriously considered. Meanwhile Labour are busy digging their own grave… we certainly can’t say we don’t live in interesting times.

StandFirm · 27/09/2025 10:43

I just hope the general public here can open their eyes to what imported MAGA trolls in Number 10 would actually mean. No, Labour aren't hoping to lose the next election (ridiculous claim). However, it seems they don't have as many online propagandists as Reform. That much might be true.
By and large I've not agreed with a lot of what Reeves has done so far but boosting mobility with EU markets will finally give a positive boost to our economy. I wish Labour weren't so afraid of their own shadow and finally rejoin the Single Market where we used to prosper (especially considering how much our economy relies on services).

How are they digging their own grave?

Am I the only one whose family is full of people who went to work somewhere in Europe for a while in their 20s then moved back? DH did a couple of years in Luxembourg and Germany in the banking sector straight after Uni. One cousin worked in Greece doing holiday rep work for a season, another taught English as a Foreign Language in Spain for one school year. Another cousin’s now DH did a year in Spain working as a handy man for British people who had holiday homes. 2 friends who were training to be solicitors were sent for a couple of months to go to the European offices of their company. (Doing a stint in another office was just standard training).

20 years ago this wasn’t noteworthy- young people might move from the north west to London to get some work for a couple of years then come back to settle down, they might just as easily go to Spain or france and it wasn’t a big deal in the early 00s.

These Visas might not change much, but I’d been a bit sad my kids generation won’t have that easy opportunity to go work aboard unless they went long haul to Australia or Canada- surely if you are a parent you’d see this as a good thing that your kids would have this chance?

Agree. I spent most of my 20s based in london but working in Europe for 6 months at a time. I worked on desks with all different nationalities. It was fantastic exposure to other cultures and set me up for a very strong and productive career. It was just what we all did. I would absolutely want that for my kids, especially at the moment.

mugglewump · 27/09/2025 11:08

If this is specifically about the youth mobility scheme, I am over the moon about it. It is the young who were most adversely affected - imagine having freedoms you've enjoyed all your life being taken away? Both my DC speak a European language and would love to spend time working abroad. Conversely, we used EU au pairs for most of our childcare when they were little and I feel sad that this has not been an option for either the young people or the families since Brexit finalised. Farmers will be glad to have young seasonal workers to help with fruit picking etc.

Lots of employers will appreciate the scheme and I think it will be popular overall and certainly not a policy that would lose an election. We all know the thing that will lose Labour the next election is the mega-powerful, non-British bilionnaire owned right wing media. However, if/when they do, Farrago will have one parliament only when all he lies comes back to haunt him. After that people will turn their backs on the right wing completely, and we will see a return to a strong Labour government.

I use critical thinking and look at the facts before making my vote

DoinFineIThink · 27/09/2025 11:13

We've literally just had an election, we had one last year. We're not due another one for around 4 years. What election? That's a long time in politics.

That sounds great, and not sure why it'd be seen as a bad thing or a "vote loser" 😕

InveterateWineDrinker · 27/09/2025 11:22

Labour have found that grappling with the biggest migration problem of all - chickens coming home to roost - has made the UK ungovernable.

If only there was some evidence of ‘thinking’. Instead we are in a storm of misinformation that is manipulating the narrative. All driven by multi millionaire media owners who benefit hugely from keeping the masses poor.

Does anyone actually pay attention to that the government is actually doing? They're far from perfect and they were starting from a bad place but actually when you look at some of the things they're implementing there's some good sensible stuff in there.

Don't be daft, that would require people to look past the headline or soundbite. Take migration, supposedly the biggest issue facing the UK.

Since Labour came to power, net migration has halved, they’ve started clearing the asylum backlog, increased removals and deportations, opened up dialogue with Europe, implemented a trial removals scheme that’s actually worked, committed to ending the use of hotels and HMOs by the end of their term, and tightened visa legislation.

So, objectively, they are doing something about migration, in fact, they're doing a hell of a lot more than the previous lot ever managed. But because small boat crossings haven’t vanished overnight, every right-whinger and their dog still screeches that their “genuine concerns” are being ignored.

I mean, I'd be willing to bet a considerable sum that less than 1% of those moaning about migration haven't even heard of the government's white paper: Restoring control over the immigration system, let alone read it.

Bloodyscarymary · 27/09/2025 11:35

I think this is great! The UK was much more vibrant when we could get European workers, especially in industries like hospitality. Similarly lots of UK young people would enjoy an overseas experience in Europe and the ability to work for global companies based in Europe (most of whom will have English as the company language FYI) or even just enjoyable summers working at vineyards to earn money for uni year etc. I think it’s much better to have this flow of young labour from counties with similar cultures and values to the UK.

And not to be racist but it would be nice to go to an expensive Greek restaurant in Mayfair with Greek staff who have knowledge of Greek food, instead of 95% Indian staff which was my experience last week!

FilterBubble · 27/09/2025 14:58

It could all change. The King may sign an agreement with Trump to sell the UK and make it into the 54th State, after Canada, Greenland and Panama. Then we won't need a PM as the chosen one will have his beautifully bruised steady hand at the tiller, and the other one likely grabbing something else. ;)

No they’ve gone up and three people including a child died in the channel this week.
