Posting here for traffic
DD has dropped her iPad behind a radiator
can’t pull it down from underneath or move it side ways past a bracket. How can I get it out.

The only way is up!! Ffs

What?! You can’t leave it like this, I want to know how it comes out 😂I couldn’t go to bed without the satisfaction of getting it out.

You need o get a loop of something flexible underneath it - string or a silk scarf or something. Then you can lift it out in the sling made from the scarf.

SleepySquirrel52 · 26/09/2025 23:25

It's relatively easy for a diyer/very easy for plumber to loosen the valve on the radiator a little -you can then lift and rotate the radiator out allowing you to get the pad. Radiator slots back on and tighten it up. Can be done with little to no leakage - i do it when decorating to paint behind them properly.

Bobiverse · 26/09/2025 23:31

Is it stuck halfway down or is it sitting on the floor but just can’t be pulled out since it can’t bend?

Get a long, thin scarf. Keeping hold of one end, feed the other down the back of the radiator and down the back of the iPad. Once the end has come out the bottoms of the radiator, feed it back up around the iPad so it wraps round like a sort of hammock. Feed it back up towards to top of the radiator (use something bendy and pointy to shove it up or some tongs to grab the end and and pull it up). Once it appears at the top of the radiator, grab it and pull both end tight so it’s holding the iPad tightly and then pull it out.

Ooh. This is booble plate all over again!

My thought exactly! From memory, OP needs a hamster and someone with very long slim arms.

Kitchen or barbecue tongs from above?

I second this. They are also very useful for retrieving things from bottom of our large recycling bin if I’ve put the wrong item in by mistake.

murasaki · 27/09/2025 00:32

I'm looking forward to hearing what is the winning strategy! I'm team untwisted metal coat hanger bent to a 90 degree angle to get under the ipad and kitchen tongs from above.

Oldraver · 27/09/2025 09:28

If you have a new build the radiators have plastic pipes that disappear into the wall in the centre of the radiator which means you can take it off it's bracket without having to disconnect any pipes

SimoneHere · 27/09/2025 09:32

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just lift the radiator off the bracket? (Unless it is a really old one with metal pipes)

Mistressofnone · 27/09/2025 09:46

Retractable tape measures can be good, the little metal tag at the end can hook underneath. Might need one in each hand!

Didimum · 27/09/2025 09:52

Did this with a phone. Got a coat hanger, bent it so it was long with hook at the end and lifted it out.

Also decorators. They don't take the rad off completely but they have them 'lean' out to paint behind them.

hidinginthebathroomagain · 27/09/2025 11:09

Sorry for the delay.
no way was I pissing about with it at bedtime. I was annoyed as DD for being silly enough to put it on the rad then telling me it fell off the bed.

DH tried the cardboard tip which didn’t work. He then looked at the bracket and lifted it clean off.

iPad is fucked however.

Oh no!!

Bobiverse · 27/09/2025 11:41

It’s not fucked, it just needs a new screen. I think the majority of UK towns have a phone and tablet repair shop. Go get a replacement screen put on.

MimiGC · 27/09/2025 11:47

Glad you got it out. If it ever happens again (or for anyone else reading this) I had exactly the same thing happen, though with a framed picture rather than an iPad. We tried everything and couldn’t shift it, until I came up with the idea of dropping down a long length of tape (like a wide curtain tape) behind the radiator, wiggling it in position to make a sling, them slowly raising it. Worked a treat and I was pretty chuffed with myself!

This. And then get her to do some chores to pay for part of it.

skyeisthelimit · 27/09/2025 11:52

it should be covered on your house insurance if you have personal possessions cover? but get a quote for a new screen as well.

How old is DD? If she isn't old enough to look after it then take it away from her permanently.

CuddlesKovinsky · 27/09/2025 11:53

Next time: dangle a scarf down one side of the iPad (keeping old of the top); dangle a second scarf down the other side. Knot the scarves at the bottom to form a sling. Pull both scarves up at the top.

CuddlesKovinsky · 27/09/2025 11:53

Keeping hold,

That was literally the first thing most people thought of. Because it’s obvious.

Fish slice and lube

I see the iPad met the same fate as Maurice!

So, in honour of Maurice...

Timpsons do iPad screen repairs - but depending on the age of your iPad it could interfere with any warranty.

The screen is £150 plus £50 fitting. It’s an iPad Air 4 so it’s probably not worth getting it done. She’s had it years.
