Who’s allergic or intolerant to Quorn (mycoprotein) ?

QuestioningQuorn · 25/09/2025 21:04

Inspired by a few threads of late; who is allergic or intolerant to Quorn? Or unbranded it is called mycoprotein.

I am. Took a few times to figure it out (TMI - projectile vomiting about 6 hours later). And have been subsequently caught out a few times eating as a guest.

It sent me down a rabbit hole about mycoprotein. Some studies say it is a more common allergen than even peanuts; yet many haven’t been exposed to it enough or ever for it to be commonly known yet.

So I checked the school dinners and it’s on there 3 times a week; plus ‘Plant x’ which no idea what that contains so potentially all of the meals. Should I be asking for no Quorn options for my kiddo? The more you eat it the more likely sensitivities and then allergies develop. And they can do rapidly and quite severely apparently. I avoid it as much as I can! Is this sensible for my kids or is this crazy parent realm?

Not allergic, but it's way too processed.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 25/09/2025 23:17

Me. Had it twice. Both times gave me diarrhoea (sorry for the TMI). I don't understand how I've ended up sensitised to it because until then I'd never had Quorn before.

Blessedbethefruitz · 25/09/2025 23:27

I cant eat quorn. I used to but the results were worse each time, severe pain and diarrhea. Like pp im also anaphylaxis allergic to penicillin, asthmatic, and have random other allergies. Currently under investigation for IBD also. Very weird.

Edit - i know of an older man (former boss) with the same quorn/meat substitute reaction as me too. And it's served at my son's school several times a week, although he never wants it.

BeautifulNights · 25/09/2025 23:32

My cousin can’t eat quorn, but then he can’t eat quite a few things, beef, pork, tomatoes, egg. That’s the only person I know who can’t eat quorn and I know a lot of vegetarians/vegans who eat quorn once a week or so.

Wiseplumant · 25/09/2025 23:36

I am ,quorn on the twice I ate it made me . threw up violently .

LemondrizzleShark · 25/09/2025 23:51

DH gets awful stomach cramping from it. I’m fine with Quorn but react to Beyond Meat - don’t know what is different ingredient-wise.

Cauldron sausages FTW.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 25/09/2025 23:59

I stopped eating about 10 years ago, as it was making me uncomfortably gassy. Nothing worse but as I have other allergies, one of which nobody has been able to pin down but regularly gives me hives, it was better to stop.

TheSpiritofDarkandLonelyWater · 26/09/2025 00:00

Not me but my grandad was. My mum made him cottage pie from Quorn one time and that is how they found out.

kippersmum · 26/09/2025 00:07

It's so interesting to hear how many people have made a link between penicillin allergy and Quorn.
We are a veggie family, myself and DC2 don't like it, my mum and DC1 can't go anywhere near Quorn. Both are allergic to penicillin! I've never come across this before

kittenkipping · 26/09/2025 00:07

I am intolerant to it. It gives me stomach cramps and diahorea As is my daughter. It’s meant my daughter won’t eat at school as they do not clearly label food nor are they honest. The chicken wrap for instance is chicken unless they have run out at which point they start shoving the vegan chicken in - (waste not want not) without telling the kids. My daughter knows because she later feels pain (and the embarrassment of the shits in a school toilet)

Octaviathethird · 26/09/2025 00:19

I used to eat it lots but I started to get bloating, cramps and wind after eating it, the symptoms gradually got worse until it was like full blown food poisoning so I stopped eating it. I'm also allergic to penicillin interestingly.

Wow that’s really not on! It can kill people!

It causes me to bloat like a helium balloon and have ‘digestive urgency.’ I used to like a Quorn sausage too, removed the element of mystery meat, shame.

Yes, I am too. And erythromycin

DumpedByText · 26/09/2025 03:15

I'm allergic to it as well, makes me vomit a lot! I'm not veggie anyway so easy for me to avoid.

Rehab4rightmove · 26/09/2025 03:33

Another one intolerant to Quorn. Had to take several days off work as a result of the last excruciating episode. Couldn't hold down water for days. Mushrooms too, very sadly.
My dd has a penicillin allergy. I'll make sure she avoids Quorn.after reading this thread.

Sharona39 · 26/09/2025 04:08

Yes! After eating it I had projectile vomiting and felt like I was going to spontaneously combust,as I was so hot.
A good few years later I thought I would try some again.
Same result occured. 🙅‍♀️

Beemail2 · 26/09/2025 04:30

Yes I am. Severe vomiting. Dr had to give anti emitic injection as v dehydrated.
Also allergic to penicillin

WhenIAmKing · 26/09/2025 06:06

Yes I’m intolerant and told school my kids aren’t allowed to eat it. They seemed baffled by this and say nobody else has ever objected! It’s on the menu 3x a week but the school is good at keeping track of what different kids are allowed so they’ve never eaten it.

Bingbangboo · 26/09/2025 07:17

This is a really interesting thread. My mum can't eat quorn as she gets terrible cramps afterwards. I'm a vegetarian, so eat a fair bit of it, but without fail I always get hiccups after eating quorn sausages. Maybe I should stop joking about one day being killed by a quorn sausage now!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/09/2025 07:45

Wow, this is fascinating. I dont know if I've ever eaten Quorn, but I'm allergic to amoxicillin, react badly to erythromycin and have type 2 diabetes. But happily eat mushrooms without issue.

I feel like I should experiment with quorn - at home, on a not busy day... 😆

user1471538283 · 26/09/2025 07:55

I cannot get on with Quorn. My skin is very sensitive anyway but it makes me itch really badly. I didn't know the link between mould, penicillin and Quorn - I'm allergic to penicillin!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 26/09/2025 08:02

Queens a mold and high processed too.

Aussiegold · 26/09/2025 08:05

Depending on how much, upset stomach to projectile vomit and diarrhea. Took me 2 years to work out what caused it as I didn't eat it very often and not always labelled.

Not allergic to anything else.

The13thFairy · 26/09/2025 09:37

i find a little bit's ok, but a meal based on it will leave me wishing I hadn't eaten it. Same with quinoa.
