I have no interest in it, but then there are plenty of films and tv shows I have no interest in. The thing that annoys me about Sex In THe City is that it is forever being touted as having some sort of universal relevance to all women when actually it's only really relevant to silly middle class twats who've got nothing to think about except shoes and pursuing monogamy - and it's a bit massively white, isn't it?. Same as Bridget Jones, but at least the first book had some good jokes.

agree madamez-tis a bit annoying, kind of like the assumption that all women love shopping, or chocolate

it's frothy stuff and there's nothing wrong with that I guess but it's not particularly relevant to me or most of the other women I know

Iota · 03/06/2008 12:23

I've never really watched the series and I shan't be going to see the film

quick hijack to say HELLO MOLESWORTH, HOW ARE YOU?

ButterflyBessie · 03/06/2008 12:24

What is Sex and the City?

Never affected my life

Solitaire · 03/06/2008 12:27

Oh god I'm so glad to read this thread. I thought I was some kind of weirdo woman cos I didn't get sex in the city. Hurrah!!

Molesworth · 03/06/2008 12:29

Hello iota I'm glad to be back (was guffawing over that Anna Friel thread last night and realised how much I've bloody well missed this place). How're you?

(sorry for hijack)

purits · 03/06/2008 13:11

Agree on the "vacuous crap" comment. A sign of the times, methinks.
The TV series used to annoy me with Carrie?s musings-to-self. She?s supposed to be a grown woman for goodness sake: why on earth was she indulging in teenage-level ruminations?

Weegiemum · 03/06/2008 13:35

its vacuous and sexist crap, worse because it shows women being stupidly sexist.

Though I have never seen it

noddyholder · 03/06/2008 13:41

Oh i've seen it and it is for fans of the series probably of which I am one.I love the shoes the bags the hair all the vacuous stuff of which you speak. Its fab

wessexgirl · 03/06/2008 13:45

I'll add my voice to the People who are Indifferent to SatC.

I've seen a few episodes of the TV series and thought it a weird concept for a programme - pick four separate fashion styles and try to hang some characters on them.

Iklboo · 03/06/2008 13:46

Watched the first series but it bored me after that

WilyWombat · 03/06/2008 13:58

Doesnt interest me at all...no murders...no forensics...not even a George Clooney

Agree totally with Joash "Also get really p*ssed off with how they promote it as having changed the way women view or talk about sex - NO IT DID NOT!!!!!!!!"

With a couple of bottles of wine and the blokes out of earshot my mates always talked like that....Waaaaay before SATC.

Also I really dont "get" the fuss over Sarah Jessica Parker, Is she that attractive/stylish? Maybe ive got no taste!

howdoesshedoit · 03/06/2008 13:58

Well, it's nothing deep but it is definitely a feel good film.
I left with a big smile on my face

Elffriend · 03/06/2008 14:14

Well I would have waited until the film came onto the telly but got invited out to see it. It was only when I got into the cinema that I relaised that I was REALLY looking forward to catching up with the characters!

'Course it's pretty much nonsense - so what?I miss my old girlfriends like hell (we are scattered around the planet and knee deep in our own lives)and all the lewd/life conversations so SATC always struck a chord as being how we really talked!

And I love SJP - she is not plastic fantastic (though a bit skinny)thank god and the character is not perfect either so she is more believable as being 'Everywoman'. I am deeply at the clothes and shoes.

What's wrong with frothy escapism anyway? I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

sexandthecitylover · 03/06/2008 14:19

Ha had to reply to this one didn't I.

But it's not really about fashion or shopping is it? It's more about friendship and relationships. And some serious issues were addressed.

I don't agree it's vacuous, I would say alot of reality TV is vacuous. And alot of stuff on some of the rather low rent satellite channels.

I think it's a very well written 'comedy' the like of which has not been seen before. Yes it can be frivolous but so what. Set in a fantastic city. The fashion and shopping are part of it but only part.

My life is serious, grinding and hard enough so for me it provides a degree of hilarious escapism. (One of my friends was surprised when I couldn't get excited about Shameless she thought that I would really like it - why would I to me it seems rather depressing). ALthough I enjoy gritty UK drama of its time - eg boys from the blackstuff etc

I think there is a tranche of US TV which is extremely well made and enjoyable think Sopranos, Scrubs, ER, Desperate Housewives, Without A Trace and so on.

What do you lot like for entertainment/light relief?

I do notice that some (note the some before I get flamed) well educated people are almost scared to admit to liking a bit of frivolity.

Still despite having a MSc I am known as Chardonnay so maybe that's it

Love2bake · 03/06/2008 14:24

YA totally U

Sex and the city...is simple brilliant and the film was excellant.

I loved the hype.

Only kidding, that's just my opinion, your entitled to feel how you want about it.

DoubleBluff · 03/06/2008 14:27

absolutlely no interest in it

Anna8888 · 03/06/2008 14:29

YABU - it was a fun film, I laughed and cried and was entertained and distracted from everyday life.

sweetbean · 03/06/2008 14:45

I also think its totally vacuous crap!!! But hey each to there own !!

Iota · 03/06/2008 14:48
