Uni wet room

Hi, I’m really posting here for traffic and help if possible!
my DD started uni last weekend, she has her own en-suite bathroom which is a wet room.
I understand how wet rooms work but the floor gets crazy wet throughout her bathroom.
i just went to b&q and they weren’t helpful at all.
So I am looking for ideas of how she could contain the water in the shower area of the wet room more to give it a chance to drain.
the shower curtain goes to the floor.
I asked in b&q if there are any types of seal (like you get on the bottom of a shower screen when it sits on the side of the bath) as I think something like that may help. Apparently that doesn’t exist.
he suggested adding a silicone strip with no more nails but that’s more permanent and I wouldn’t want her to get charged for damage.
any advice would be super helpful please!

Just get her a mop to whizz around afterwards

You can get wet room floor barriers or mini portable shower screens which might be worth a try

She could get an inflatable bathtub and put it on the floor in the shower area - there’ll be a plug in the bottom so just leave that open and over the shower drain.

Wet room is designed to get the floor wet !
get a squeegee-
add a long handle if u like !!

MigGirl · 24/09/2025 16:55

DD is having this exact same problem. I suggested that was maybe why the flat has been provided with 2 mops. She could mop it after use or DD has suggest a squeegee, which would also work. The room isn't very big.

Decent floor squeegee? Most holiday places we have stayed in just had one of these.

Rocketpants50 · 24/09/2025 16:57

A little paddling pool!

Or if you look on amazon you can get barriers with suction pads- they arent perfect but might help.

Have you tried unblocking the shower drain with a snake thing? DS had the same issue but it's not my first rodeo and I had packed a snake which got two massive clumps of hair out, we then put Mr Muscle drain unblocker down and it hasn't flooded since.

Also make sure the shower head isn't pointing out into the room so much, try to ensure that it's positioned directly above the drain as much as possible, so the water flows down into it rather than out into the room. I'm used to them as I need to use accessible bathrooms in hotels, so I know how the water can spray outwards even with shower curtains.

Keep a long handled widow blade in the shower and pull the water off the floor into the shower after she is done. Keep some crocs or flip flops handy for when she has to use the bathroom and wants to keep her feet dry. A doormat outside the shower is another option to avoid wet footprints after using the bathroom.

Yes a squeegee is what she needs. Have you taught her that after, you dont just walk out leaving the area wet in any case? You ensure no water is pooling because it causes mould and limescale.

Crazy wet as in blocked drain or crazy wet like you’ve just had a shower?

Ugh I know exactly what you mean, had one in my last house, looked fancy but in reality it flooded the bathroom every flipping time. A squeegee is no good if it actually floods while you’re showering, which mine did. Started off using bath mats, but then who wants sodden mats every time. Eventually we stuck a strip down to contain it, didn’t look great but at least it didn’t flood quite so badly. That suction one above looks quite good?
We are building our next house now, nothing will persuade me to have a wet room !

This is a good point. If the drain is slow it stands to reason there might be a blockage. Get maintenance to have a look—God knows rents for these places are high enough.

I have the wet room problem, too. I find placing a barrier of highly absorbent bathmat + towel works well, but is a faff and not always guaranteed to work. Then you have to put the mat etc. into the laundry straight away. I've finally opted for a portable shower pan. They are designed for campers, but can be used indoors as well. Plenty of choice on Amazon - I've opted for the highest-sided one.
