Going to the shop with Chicken Pox?

DesTeeny · 24/09/2025 07:18

DD4 may have chicken pox, I don't know for certain because apart from the spots, she is absolutely fine, no rash, no upset, nothing. I can't tell if it's chicken pox or a viral rash, as she had a stomach virus last week (thank you so much primary school, she's never been ill so often).

I've kept her off school just in case but I need to go to the pharmacy, and a shop. Is she OK to come with me if we go when it's quiet and keep her away from other people? And thoughts on going for a walk/ feed the ducks /outdoor play area if there aren't any other kids?

AIBU to take her out?

No she didnt!
You dont catch shingles from chickenpox
You can only develop shingles if you've had chickenpox in the past. CP then reactivates as shingles when youre stressed or have a low immune system

DS has had CP 2x. Friend has had it 3x. Neither have yet had shingles.

What's your point?
I was pointing out you can only get shingles if you've had chickenpox before

When I do that it comes up as bed bugs, which it absolutely isn't.

Can you ring the pharmacy ahead of time and ask if they can book you straight into the consultation room away from others?

In an ideal world you wouldn't go out but when needs must and it's essential to her care then see if those shops can make adjustments for you.

You can't keep her off school and then say she's fine to go to the shops with the same symptoms .... No.

This ^ actually
it will send her a very mixed message.
And please don’t take her to the pharmacy and shop with suspected chicken pox, as PPs have said there going to be elderly and pregnant women and your DD is at her top contagious at the moment.

This is the third day, no blisters have developed at all, the spots seem to be getting smaller.

Ah, that doesn’t sound like typical chicken pox.

Has she got spots on her hands or feet? I say this as hand, foot and mouth can present similarly to the pox and you say she’s got one on her lip?

Obviously not a doctor, just throwing personal experience and ideas out there!

Please don't take her into shops. I've never had the chicken pox and I'm in my late forties, think about vulnerable older people who can get shingles and young babies.

Growlybear83 · 24/09/2025 10:10

As others have said, you absolutely can’t take a child who you think might have a highly contagious virus into a pharmacy or any other shop. If it was me I would ring the pharmacist and ask if they would be willing to pop outside the shop when you arrive to look at the spots, or send the pharmacist or doctor a photo. You really can’t risk your daughter passing this on to a vulnerable person - if you’re sufficiently concerned to keep her off school then don’t take her into crowded shops where she can infect people!

If only we lived in a world where delivery's and phones existed to help in these situations oh wait 🙄 Its always the same I have covid or some kind of infectious disease but I just need to nip here and there but il only be quick. People are so selfish and irritating

So... The baby can still go to nursery, even though she's potentially infectious for the next two weeks because she's got no symptoms currently? Why would she be so far behind the big girl with symptoms etc.?

I'm really confused.

My eldest had a few spots that looked like a viral rash and only a few that had scabbed over ( he was not unwell and acted as he normally would) however 13 days later our baby was covered from head to toe, you could actually watch new spots appearing, they were everywhere and she was extremely poorly with them

best just to isolate for a few days to make sure..

HairsprayBabe · 24/09/2025 10:28

My children developed chicken pox at soft play - were fine when we arrived but were totally spotty by the time we left (early of course) - the horror I felt when I realised was a highlight of motherhood for me.

I agree with deliveroo/uber eats - if you absolutely need to take her into a shop and she still fits in the pushchair I would stick her in with the rain cover on. Other than that fresh air walks is really the only reasonable reason to take her out.

How selfish.

You do realise that the CP vaccine is new and will launch on NHS in Jan 26? So unless children were vaccinated privately…adults have not generally been vaccinated and not all adults have had chickenpox.

So you think those who have not had chickenpox and those who could not afford the vaccine are fair game?

Yes, I had to look it up, and it only came out this year.
My kids are all vaccinated, the chicken pox one wasn't an option as far as I'm aware when they were little.

Yep. I'm asthmatic. Once spent a week in hospital after someone who works in health care popped round to see us whilst symptomatic because 'they felt okay'. You don't know what ailments the people you're interacting with have or if they care for family members who are vulnerable. We know a shop worker who still masks up. Not because they're scared of Covid but because they care for their Father who has Cancer. He has zero immune system to fight off anything he might catch on Chemotherapy.

Uber is a godsend for things like this.

I didn’t know anyone who had chickenpox when I got it as an adult. I probably picked it up in the pharmacy or local shop from a child who was taken out by their ignorant parent.

I was in my late 20s, very fit and well and I was very ill and then floored for a long time afterwards. Not a few days, but weeks and months.

People are more infectious 2 before the pox appear so unless that ignorant parent was psychic they wouldn't have had a clue their child had chicken pox.

People don’t get shingles from someone with chicken pox. They get shingles, because they have had chicken pox in the past. However, they could get chickenpox if they have never had it before.

Pharmacy staff are not going to want to catch chickenpox, if they’re haven’t had it before, especially if they are pregnant.

@BlueandWhitePorcelain I thought you could only get shingles if you had already had chicken pox, but that it was triggered by being exposed to the virus again ? Does exposure not cause the shingles to appear? X

No, in fact exposure is supposed to help boost the immune system in someone who's had CP before and help prevent shingles.

It was one of the reasons behind UK not giving the CP vaccine in the past; they thought shingles cases would increase as there would be less exposure to CP to help boost the immune system.
