To ask if you would ever do a job knocking doors?

Just saw a job advertised as an interviewer (market research)
It said you would be knocking on people's doors to interview them.

Cringe. I could never do that.
Reminded me of when double glazing sales people used to knock.
Do they still do that?

I definitely could not cold call at the door?
I wonder how easy it is to fill these jobs?
Could you do it?

I trained with IPSOS/Mori years ago. You had to do a few jobs cold calling before applying for social research jobs. I hated doing the cold calling, but it was good once I got onto the social research projects. If the job advertised is just market research, with no progression, I personally wouldn’t do it.

CeffylCoch · 23/09/2025 18:02

I would hate this

Hoppinggreen · 23/09/2025 18:02

I would only do it if it was that or starve
They get young people and students to do it by basically lying to them. DD saw one advertised on her gap year and when she applied she asked if it was door knocking and they said no. Then on the 2nd interview they said it was, she politely said she wasn't interested and the man shouted down the phone at her.
I was in the next room and came in and took the phone offf her and gave him an earful

mzpq · 23/09/2025 18:04

No I wouldn't.

I absolutely hate doorstep sales/chuggers/preachers etc.

I'm very firm with them. I smile and say a firm 'No thank you' whilst closing the door, without even asking what they're trying to flog me/get me to sign up to.

And don't even start me on the "Hello, how are you?" "Oooh lovely dog, what's his name?" "Don't worry, I'm not selling anything".

🙄🙄

Do double glazing still knock doors?

Do double glazing still knock doors?

Only if it’s glass. Otherwise, they tend to knock on the windows.

Octavia64 · 23/09/2025 18:05

I have.

It was for something that I felt was good.

ForeverHopeful3 · 23/09/2025 18:07

A job is a job and as long as its honest earning, your attitude towards is it kind of disgusting... Just because YOU don't see yourself doing this, doesn't mean the job is any less worthy of a job someone else is doing as long as you do it honestly and its earning you your daily living.

Luxio · 23/09/2025 18:08

I would rather do any other job including working back in a shop with all the crap that entailed from customers than knock on doors. I can't honestly think of a job I'd hate more than bothering people in their homes.

BauhausOfEliott · 23/09/2025 18:10

I wouldn’t do it, but only because I’d be useless at it. I don’t really see why you’re acting as if it’s equivalent to kicking puppies for a living.

RandomUsernameHere · 23/09/2025 18:11

I wouldn’t like to do it, but I can think of much worse jobs too.

PastaAllaNorma · 23/09/2025 18:12

I did it when I was young for a few months and it was pretty soul destroying. I treat people doing it now with a great deal of compassion. It's a god-awful way to pay the bills. Even call centres are better

"If I may interrupt, I assume you're going to ask me to support your charity with a monthly direct debit. I'll save you some time by saying I'm happy with the causes I've chosen to support this way and am not looking to change them.
"I have done your job myself and I know how hard it is, so I do wish you the best of luck."

They are all generally nice about going away after that. Poor sods.

I think bothering people in their own homes so you can earn a bit of money is a pretty shit thing to do.

Imagine if every company did it, you'd never be away from your own doorstep.

zazazooms · 23/09/2025 18:14

I did once when it was literally that or sign on. I fucking hated it!

Problem is if you’re cold calling houses, a lot of residents would see this as annoying or being hassled. So you might feel you’re doing an ‘honest’ day’s work whereas the people whose doors you’re knocking on might feel pretty differently about your employment.

Done the worst sort of this when younger - it was fully 'commission based'

Two weeks - I earnt nothing, after I haid paid for transport to the areas.

I'm doing a different type of crap job now.

Currently wondering what all my education was for.

Arlanymor · 23/09/2025 18:20

No, I don’t think it’s very nice to accost people on their own doorsteps - for any reason, conducting research, selling something or pushing religion or politics. I’m actually surprised that doorstepping still exists in an era of online surveys.

JamDisaster · 23/09/2025 18:22

I’ve knocked on doors as a volunteer for the Lib Dems- fairly easy round here as it’s a very Lib Dem area and even people who don’t vote for them are not hostile to them. I couldn’t do door to door sales though.

CoffeeCantata · 23/09/2025 18:24

No. I used to do a charity collection years ago and that was hard enough!

ginasevern · 23/09/2025 18:25

I did it and in another country too. I was surprisingly successful but I was much younger. Don't think I'd do it now.

Same

I've done political canvassing. Not my favourite thing to do but most people are pleasant

2chocolateoranges · 23/09/2025 18:28

Not a chance, I’d rather starve.

I hate people pestering me in my own home.

Tollington · 23/09/2025 18:29

No. I started a job a long time ago which involved knocking doors and trying to sell

I left on the second day. Half the people weren’t in/didn't answer and the other half who did answer weren’t interested.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 23/09/2025 18:34

I did it for ONS but people had a letter sent in advance to warn them and they could call the freephone number to say no. A decent percentage would call and say they would participate. Then you’d knock on the rest. They get a voucher so many said yes.

I don’t think I could do doorstep sales though.

CantThinkOfAnotherUsernane · 23/09/2025 18:38

I personally wouldn’t do it unless it was that or starve but nothing against those who choose to do the job.
My main gripe with them is they always come at tea time! We had one earlier this evening, I was trying to cook for everyone whilst battling a laundry pile, deal with my youngests latest strop when the doorbell went, dog started barking and as lovely as the lady was I just wanted to tell her to fuck off!
I didn’t though I very politely told her I wasn’t interested
