Ulcer on tonsil…owwww

I’m very prone to mouth ulcers. Seen ENT and apparently it’s just something I’m susceptible to. When I get a bad one it usually lasts about a week but makes me miserable during that time. Not just localised pain but raised glands, headache, mega fatigue and just generally feeling run down and horrible.

I have one on my throat/tonsil at the moment and it’s hell. I’m taking paracetamol 4 hourly and gargling with salt water but I can’t apply anything topical due to where it is. I switched to sensodyne toothpaste a while back but it hasn’t stopped them completely. I just feel rotten and I’m sick of losing weeks of my life feeling rubbish because of this. I take vitamin supplements and bloods are ok. Any tips?

An ulcer on your tonsil, might be a Quinsy. I had it once. You will need antibiotics if so as it can be quite painful and make you ill. I would ask for a GP appointment. It might be a mouth ulcer but I would get it checked to be safe.

Had a bad spell where I got tonsillitis and then once over that had loads of ulcers, it was awful! For something so small they are agony. There’s a spray you can get from a pharmacy, Difflam spray. Spray it on the ulcer and it does numb it for a while. It’s expensive but was better than anything else when I had mine.

I get more if I’m stressed/run down but thankfully not as often anymore.

I guess all you can do is keep up with vitamin supplements (especially vitamin C, don’t even miss a single dose) and use mouthwash daily. If stress could be a factor definitely try and work on that (yoga, exercise, meditation? Whatever you fancy!). Can you chat to your doctor about how this is really impacting you? Sounds like you’re really struggling with it. Can they give you steroids or anything to take to control them? I’m no medical professional so no idea but if it’s impacting your life so heavily I’d like to hope they’d look into options for helping

I’m pretty sure it’s a mouth ulcer. I get them soften I recognise the signs and symptoms and there is a visible ulcer there. If it gets much worse I’ll get checked out but from experience they tend to heal themselves within a week or so. It’s just coping in the meantime that’s the issue.

I’ll try the mouthwash, thanks.

My dentist referred me to ENT as he noticed one while I was there for a check up and once I explained how often I get them he did the referral. ENT were pretty useless sadly.

Oraldene mouthwash.

My DD gets ulcers often and its the only thing that shifts them. Its specifically for mouth ulcers/sore throats.

We get it from Amazon and are never without some in the bathroom cabinet for when she gets one.

Hydrocortisone tablets you keep in your mouth and stick to the ulcer; if you let it dissolve a bit and gargle it, it'll get to your tonsil.
Toothpaste without sls. I use the corsodyl salty one.
Gargle with soluble aspirin in hot water.
You can also buy a paste called adcortyl in orabase from overseas pharmacies - great stuff.

Kathyparr · 22/09/2025 22:11

Check your toothpaste doesn’t contain sodium
lauryl sulphate, some sensodyne toothpastes do. It might be a sensitivity to that. That was my issue and not coming into contact with it has changed my life.

ittakes2 · 22/09/2025 22:14

Have you been checked for ceoliac disease?

Shoemadlady · 22/09/2025 22:18

Gargle with soluble aspirin instead. It will make a big difference x
