To find it weird that my friend said she’s “worried about me because I’m beautiful and don’t date?”

We were chatting and out of nowhere she said “I’m just worried about you… you’re beautiful and you don’t date.” I didn’t know what to say. I’ve been single for a while and honestly fine with it, but her tone made it sound like something’s wrong with me because I’m not out here actively dating.

AIBU to think that’s a strange reason to be “worried” about someone?

That's an extremely odd comment. As if it's your duty, as an attractive woman, to be out there dating.

Weird comment on every level.

Clumsily phrased, but surely she just means that you've got a lot going for you and are a catch, and are you happy not dating or do you want to talk about it?

Frankly, your friend has revealed herself to be an idiot. We don’t need a man to determine our worth or beauty. She seems to have some odd ideas here.

Friend meant it as a compliment I would guess.

Thank you to friend, and move on as usual woth your life

Yeah I did wonder if that was the intention and I get that some people just want to express care, even if it comes out awkwardly. But I think what struck me was the specific framing, like being beautiful and single automatically warrants concern.

It felt less like she was asking if I was happy and more like she was saying “this doesn’t make sense to me so it must be a problem.” I’m fine with being asked how I’m doing, it’s just the assumption underneath that felt a bit off.

some people really hate being single and assume everyone else is the same.

Why didn't you ask her what she meant if you found it so odd? She's probably going to have more idea that randoms on MN who weren't there!
