To ask what you think of this comment by my friends husband

We often host a couple we are close with and vice-versa. We used to eat out a lot but since the prices went sky high we enjoy cooking for each other.

It was our turn to host on Friday night. My friends’ husband said he was weighing up whether to play golf on Saturday but he’d have to see how he felt in the morning because ‘it was usually a lottery whether he’d spend the next day on the toilet after eating here’. My friend immediately interjected and said he just meant the food can be quite rich and she shot him a really pissed off look.

Nothing else was said about it, they both ate all their food and thanked us at the end of the night.

I can’t help but find that comment rude and wondering if we’ve made him ill in the past!

I think it sounds like he has been ill in the past. If it was a joke the wife wouldn't have made the excuse of the food being rich.

Luluissleeping · 21/09/2025 17:03

Had he been drinking a lot and made an unwise remark as an unfunny joke?
I probably would have turned to his wife and told her oh well, we'll only expect you next time.
What is he usually like? Arrogant?

NarnianQueen · 21/09/2025 20:19

Is there some reason he might want to hint at your hygiene? Cats walking in the counter or something? If I’d been I’ll after eating at a friends’ house I’d be reluctant to tell them!

OhNoNotSusan · 21/09/2025 20:21

do you make highly spiced food?

saveforthat · 21/09/2025 20:25

I think that is very very rude. If he doesn't enjoy your food he should make some excuse not to come.

OneNewLeader · 21/09/2025 20:26

He was once unwell after eating at your home. They’re sweet, didn’t mention it, wine was taken and he made a joke.

PickledElectricity · 21/09/2025 20:28

My lovely, lovely, clean freak friend cooked chicken drumsticks and made homemade ice cream for us once and gave us both the awful runs. We don't know which was the culprit but I would NEVER even suggest this to her. We circumvent this by going out or requesting veggie meals and declining desserts based on fictitious diets.

Now that he's said that though I would speak to your friend, assure her that you're not going to get upset or angry but you need to know if you made them ill and try to get it out of her. Then either amend behaviour or go back to eating out or maybe just eat at home but meet for drinks.

If I poisoned someone I would be absolutely mortified and would want to know.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 21/09/2025 20:32

Oh my goodness, I’d be mortified!

Letstheriveranswer · 21/09/2025 20:34

Maybe he has a sensitive stomach to some foods, and doesn't want to say anything so as not to put you out?

SummerFrog25 · 21/09/2025 20:36

I'd have discussed it further. I wouldn't be offended, many people can't tolerate certain ingredients & if he can't it's better that you know. Ask your friend about it when you see her.

EDIT: Forgot to say, it was rude/inconsiderate of him to mention it in the way he did. He should have spoken to you (or asked his wife to) properly if they have been unwell & think it's likely to happen again (if he can't tolerate onions for example)

fruitypancake · 21/09/2025 20:38

I reckon he’s trying to be funny and has missed the mark

Barneysmomma · 21/09/2025 20:39

Does he drink a lot of alcohol when he eats at your house? Might that be causing his upset stomach or does he always have a hangover the next day? He didn't specify why he was on the toilet ......
