I’ve just had to do a 5 hour drive today on various motorways and dual carriageways. I’ve been driving for almost 30 years. Never had a speeding ticket and haven’t had an accident for 25 years and I do consider myself generally a safe driver.
Recently I’ve noticed that so many cars start speeding up when you try and overtake them. So you’ll be driving along in the left lane at say 70. You are approaching a car who is driving slower. You indicate and pull to the right to go around then and as you get parallel to them they speed up. This happened at least 4 times over the 5 hour drive. The last time I got up to 78mph and they were still matching my speed. At this point I slowed down and pulled back in behind them. Whereby they then also slowed down and now we’re both going at 65! The next time I tried to overtake they “let” me and stayed at 65. Is it deliberate? I’ve looked at the drivers each time and they are a range of ages and sex etc. It’s not like it’s boy racers who don’t like being overtaken by a middle aged woman in a Honda Jazz! The one who matched me to 78mph was a similar aged woman in a Fiesta!
I just find this is happening more and more. I can’t work out if it’s deliberate or more than people “use” others cars to work out how fast to drive. So like they see you going faster and think oh I’m going quite slowly I’ll speed up a bit! Not actually realising they are trapping you in the right hand lane because unless you are willing to speed to 80+ you can’t get past them!
