Car repair possible issue with garage - do you just have to take their word for it?

I probably am BVU to ask on here but needed traffic and not sure where else to put it. Had the timing chain replaced on my car 3 weeks ago, felt it was still a bit "rattly" but couldn't put my finger on it. Then it developed a small oil leak. Went back to the garage and they said this was a leak in a rubber seal (looks like a drinking straw size pipe) on the rocker cover gasket and asked for £200+ to repair it. I've since googled and discussed with a car-savvy neighbour and apparently this fault often happens after a timing chain replacement if the little oil pipe is damaged during the procedure. I also think the noise is connected, maybe something still loose somewhere after they worked on it?

So, if I go back to the garage and say is this fault related to the original repair, if they say no, what can I do? How can I approach it with them bearing in mind I've managed to pull together this much knowledge but if they say oh yes but this is not because of anything we've done its now due to a thingy wotsit in the doo dah then I'm stumped. It's not something I can helpfully argue about is it? Do I just suck it up and let them have another go? The original work (which was definitely needed there's no doubt about that bit) was £800. (I live alone and no one can come with me in case anyone is going to suggest that). I'm thinking if I have to go to another garage and get a second opinion, the first garage is still under no obligation to accept it.

This doesnt have to relate specifically to a timing chain, I mean in general if you don't think the garage are being straight with you, what can you do?
