Why do some parents feel the need to constantly talk about how advanced their child is ?

In the process stressing the other parents out ? There’s always one or two parents who do this: for example, ‘Johnny is reading novels in year 1 ‘ Johnny is doing complex maths in year 1. This parent hasn’t told me personally about it, but several mums have told me about it, kind of looking for reassurance that their kid isn’t reading novels and trying to gage what I thought about the whole thing.

why is this necessary ? If Johnny is reading novels or doing complex maths, why tell everyone ? My kid is good at some stuff but I don’t feel the need to broadcast.

I've never come across this at my twins' big standard primary school.
However, I'm sure it happens.

Probably just a proud parent talking about their kid.

It's not necessary, but there's only so much people have in common and can chat about in the playground.

I'm someone who doesn't really talk to anyone on school runs, but I really don't begrudge parents chatting about their kids and what they are proud of.

I'm sorry that the fact my little Araminta is doing open heart surgery in year 2 makes you feel inadequate as a parent. Perhaps you shouldn't have given your children iPads and chicken nuggets and they too could be getting a double first from Cambridge while competing in Olympic show-jumping.

I absolutely never share about my darling son, Necropolis, who read War and Peace aged 5. I also never mention little Isambard's four minutes mile. I mean, he was 8 so it isn't that impressive.
