To try and make myself drink a wine I dont like

My favourite wine is rose. I fancied wine last night and all I found was a red - 1000 Stories Zinfandel - tucked away. I just cannot get away with the bite in red wine at the end of a swallow and yet I'm trying another glass tonight. I always think red wine drinkers are more sophisticated so I am trying to get my palette used to it. Is that even a thing?! Has anyone else had a similar thing with a drink and grown to love it?

I put lemonade in it. I just don’t like it on its own 😂

mumofoneAloneandwell · 18/09/2025 20:10

Omg I am going through the same thing!

I want to be a sophisticated wine drinker

Quite like sauv blanc

Maybe try pinot noir, as its more fruity x

You can definitely train yourself to like red wine; I’ve done it, and although it’s never my first choice, it means if that’s all that’s on offer I can enjoy it. Rose is a bit of a “starter wine” - nothing wrong with that if it’s what you like the most, but it’s the least “wine-y” wine if that makes sense! So moving on to other wines is sometimes a bit of a chore. Up to you if you want to do that or not. No shame in drinking just what you like.

Stick an ice cube in it. I always do that with wine I don’t like. There are very few I do like TBF.

Haha I am 40 so a starter wine is funny but I started my drinking on VK, Reef and Lambrini so it makes sense. I recently graduated from White Zinfandel to Cotes de Provence.

I can't get to like Sauvi Blanc either.

I thought this bottle might be a cheaper wine but when ive looked online it isnt. And its highly rated!

Maybe i should go back to VK

Sounds mental to me that people force themselves to “like” a specific drink in order to appear more sophisticated!

Comefromaway · 18/09/2025 20:21

No way would I do that. I won’t waste calories on something I’m not enjoying.

DragonScales · 18/09/2025 20:37

Just decant it into ice cube trays and freeze. Very handy for cooking where recipes need a splash of wine.

Could you go to a wine tasting evening somewhere? That way you'll get to try loads of wines and hopefully find some you like.

blankcanvas3 · 18/09/2025 20:38

I trained myself to like red wine. I literally just drank it until I liked it! It’s not my first choice, but I really enjoy it now

WhereAreMyKids · 18/09/2025 20:41

I only drink red, to be polite, when in my husband's home country (hot) and they serve it cold in most places, blasphemy I know!

Makes it more palatable for me. 😅

TaborlinTheGreat · 18/09/2025 20:50

Why wouldn't you just drink what you like? I loved red wine until I developed an intolerance to it. Now I like white or rosé, but I only like properly dry ones. Rosé isn't a starter wine and it varies a lot, just like red and white do.

Fudgeytastic · 18/09/2025 20:54

Hell no. I’m a dirty pinot Grigio woman and I own it. Enjoy what you like, life is far too short!

witheringrowan · 18/09/2025 20:55

Try a glass with a curry, steak with a peppery sauce or chili - something meaty with a bit of spice or zing. Or with a smoked cheese. It will balance things out if the tannins are coming across too strongly for you.

If I hadn't ever tried eating and drinking new foods that felt a bit more grown up, I would still be surviving on breast milk and rusks.

There are flavours of all kinds of things - food, music, art, people - that aren't immediately appealing. Trying new experiences that other people really like is part of being a functioning adult. No-one likes coffee, beer or modern jazz the first time they encounter them.
