Son accused of wolf whistling at neighbours!

lopperz · 18/09/2025 12:05

15 yo son was at home yesterday when the neighbour opposite banged on the door and confronted son for “wolf whistling” at his wife and daughters! We have the windows open a lot as I run incredibly warm (perimenopause)

Neighbour said he would go to the police if he didn’t pack it in. He got called a creep. He was incredibly aggressive. Sod’s Law that my son was the only one home

I’m VERY upset. I’m in two minds to post the ring camera footage to our local FB page. This grown behaved extremely inappropriately towards a child!

I wfh and am home the vast vast majority of time. Son whistles (we all do) to call the dog over as she’s going deaf. Apparently son tried to explain this but neighbour was having none of it.

My son is on the shy side and no trouble whatsoever. My son is what you might describe as a geek. He is terrified to run into this bully now.

My husband thinks this neighbour has roid rage.

What the heck do I do? I went over to discuss this but the neighbour doubled down. We don’t like this neighbour at all as he is the walking definition of toxic male.

Its insanity.

Horrible but as you have explained the situation I would leave it now and stay out of his way. If he harasses you or your son again you can make a police report.

CunningLinguist2 · 18/09/2025 12:19

"We whistle for the dog to come in. Stick a sock in it and jog on." Done.

childofthe607080s · 18/09/2025 12:21

A wolf whistle is a distinct sound and you shouldn’t be using it for the dog as it can make other people very uncomfortable

K0OLA1D · 18/09/2025 12:21

Ignore the twat.

You've tried to explain and so has your son. If you are happy he hasn't done it then there is nothing more you can do to appease him!

We are not wolf whistling…just generic whistle sounds. Not one in particular

You might be better with a high pitched dog whistle, where is the dog when you need to call it in, I'd report any further incidents to the police and stop whistling. Do not post anything on FB, you can show it to the police, don't answer the door to him again.

I think the point is that he isn't using a wolf whistle to call the dog but the neighbour has decided that's what's happening. The problem here is the neighbour not knowing the difference.

I would not stop whistling- if the dog is going deaf then that may be the only frequency she can still hear in.

Come on now

bitterexwife · 18/09/2025 12:25

I agree, don’t post on FB. Show to police though

Absolutely nothing wrong with whistling for a dog - a centuries old practice! You e explained and they can now do one. Non issue and those of you saying it should be changed come on now really? Really really??

Apocketfilledwithposies · 18/09/2025 12:26

Do you chat to the woman and her daughter at all op? Maybe you approaching them while he's not around would be an idea?

Keep your cameras up and tell ds not to answer the door to this guy if he's home alone.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/09/2025 12:30

This is harassment though. Go to the police:

childofthe607080s · 18/09/2025 12:33

Wolf whistling is a distinct sound and was listed hate in Nottingham for a while when they tried ( and succeeded ) to reduce mysogenistic crimes it’s not a neutral thing so don’t mock it - not that the OP did but PP poo poohed it which would aggravate

sorry can’t listen to your audio at present

OwlBeThere · 18/09/2025 12:35

I’d just go to the police. Bullies get away with it because they intimidate people.

Oakcupboard · 18/09/2025 12:45

Your poor son, hope he is ok! I’d be livid. I would try to explain to wife and daughter alone if you can. Don’t stop whistling for the dog or it will make your son look guilty.

obviously they don’t use a wolf whistle to call the dog but the neighbours have misheard it

This.

I feel a lot of people in mumsnet chose to interpret situations cynically just to be annoying.

No one is wolf whistling. Obviously. That has been stated. More than once.

This reminds me of the time my almost blind uncle was standing at the door getting some air. Along comes this elderly lady and hears a wolf whistle. She rounds on uncle accusing him of being a pervert. What she hadn't seen was my uncles very vocal mynah bird sitting in the window recess. Poor uncle couldn't convince her it was the bird!
I hope your son feels better soon. He doesn't need unwarranted accusations.

You say that, but you weren’t there. You’re certain he didn’t, the neighbour is certain he did.

Worralorra · 19/09/2025 08:55

The video shows the “get your attention” whistle that precedes a wolf-whistle (the “we-you whip” part preceding the “whip whoo” of the actual wolf whistle part).
Neighbours are clearly clueless: ignore and report to police if thug neighbour approaches your house, you or your son again.

InterestedDad37 · 19/09/2025 09:02

Say 'the dog is basically a wolf, and he's whistling for it'. Not sure that would help with droid-rage man though 🙂

BlueEyedBogWitch · 19/09/2025 09:05

Why can’t your husband go round and stand up for his child?

Round3HereWeGo · 19/09/2025 09:07

Hi OP

If you have a door cam, could it have caught a sample.of your son whistling your dog?

If not, maybe record the next time he whistles your dog so you have an example of what he does in case neighbours causes more issues.

Also, can you talk to the wife alone or with the daughters? If he is a roid head they might think more clearly. They may be embarrassed by his behaviour and not agree with him. They may be more willing to have a reasonable chat about it.
